How many of you self-employed people would take a job working for someone else?
Here is the scenario.
You're running your own business and doing your own thing when someone offers you a job. Lets say you make 40k USD/year doing your own thing but the job offer would pay you 60K a year. How many of you would sell yourself out to the job offer? Someone's post got me thinking this. The only way I would probably do this is if my business model blew and the money I made myself started to go down on a steady basis. Personally, I rather the 40k/year and be my own man than the 60k/year but that is just me So, what would you do? |

I'd have to agree with you on this, and not only that but i think working for someone else will kind of limited what you would be able to to/kill off your creativity. I know when i worked for someone a while ago i had some kickass ideas which never got heard/taken seriously, however, being on my own and implementing those ideas have actually brought in a decent buck or two. |

I would join a team if the offer came up that was comparable to my current income. When you have a bunch of dependents (wife and 4 kids) you tend to go with the guaranteed check first. Of course, if I was single I would never give up freelancing.

I worked for someone recently and I found out I am not built for it. If I have 12 hours worth of work I put in 12 hours. People like me get screwed in companies as you end up doing everyones work. Where as on my own this is a real plus as shit gets done.

No chance in hell. I was offered a job at 19 long before I got into this business that was as much as I make now and I turned it down. There are only umpteen different things I can do for money without being employed by someone else.

NOPE! Haven't worked in an employment situation for more than 10 weeks - in the last 30 years!
So why start now??? Unless: a million bucks p.a. in job doing something like one gallery template per day could -maybe- change my mind... Nah - dream on!

One angle to consider to answer the 60K question:
Does the risk outweight the benefit. Make a list of of both of pro's and con's, then its in black and white :-) I would never wheel and deal my freedom away but thats me. If your a fire starter don't do it, if you have done all you can to be independent and have only hit 40K, consider it. If your of great value perhaps you can keep your independence and make a consulting deal for less money, this way you maybe accept 20K as consultant combined with your 40K from independence, and you bag the 60K total you were enticed about at the beginning. Last point is if you take the job for experience you can always come back and be independent, if you do this I would hope you have some job security in writing..... Maybe keep your business on the side and let someone manage your "properties" for a nice cut that way if the job goes belly up your not starting from nothing. |

Well you see, it all depends where you've been. I've been broke and don't want to be there ever again. However, I know what not having a secure income is and let me tell you - tomorrow is my last day of a 'real job' and it's stressing the shit outta me.
I'd take a secure job just to keep me sane (preferrably if I could do it from home) - make sure the bills are paid and maintain this on the side. Joe, depending on what you are offered, if it keeps you sane and you can still maintain what you have now, sure.

It would have to be a shitload more than I was making on my own and even then maybe not. If the job was going to be fairly stress free - my own office, no office politics, no one looking over my shoulder - then maybe, but the money would have to be HUGE.
Working at home for myself is the second most fantastic job I've ever done. (the first, of course, being a mommy) There is nothing like working to your own timetable, taking days off when YOU want to, not only at weekends, being able to go on vacation at the drop of a hat or better yet, take a month or two and go to the Bahamas or somewhere with your laptop and work part of the time, and just chill the rest of the time, being able to work almost anywhere in the world....... I've rambled long enough. Working from home is da bomb and I doubt anyone would ever pay me enough to entice me back into an office.

I do have my own biz and I am also employed by Net Pond to run their gay resourse site.
I do it for the money, potiental, free advertising on Alt Masters, exposure, creditbility. Only reason I get free ad space on Alt Masters is because I run it. Wished I could get it free on all of the Ponds networked resourses...lmao |

YEs, depends on the job... sometimes the stress and other bullshit that goes with running a business is not worth the hassle. Shit... if the $$$ was right and all I have to do was my job, no fucking taxes, collections, billing, sales, Shit yes I would take it.
I am a designer/programmer... I do not want to do all the other shit that goes with running a business. Too much stress. Oh yes, and let's not forget those assholes that pay their invoices late.... If they are late, then I am late on my bills. Give me a steady paycheck anyday. But of course, the money would have to be at least equal to my current salary.. or very close anyway. ![]() |

i would have to agree it depends on the job. Everyone has their price for everything and anything. Hell throw enough cash in someones face and they'll take it in the ass from long dong silver.

Hello...this is the same thing I have been thinking about for 6 months. I do pretty good with a group of site I have, over grand a week, but I really do want to go to work for one of the big affiliate programs. I would consider going to work for someone for around 50,000 a year. Thing is...I would halfta have a few options...I want to be paid for my performance :-) If I bring in 250,000$ profit...I want my cut. I think if I could just get my foot in the door I could make a ton of money. I also own a off-line advertising company to help me promote programs.
No I will not give up my sites but they only take a few half days a week to run my sites. I guess it all depends on what you are wanting outta life ![]()

Joe, this type of question is never cut and dried so easily. There are a ton of factors that have to be weighed and considered in every situation. The best advice in here so far is to take all the pros and cons of any particular situation, and weigh it out. And then of course, whichever way the scale falls, you ultimately gotta decide if you can be happy with the decision you make. Regardless of what you choose, if you're not going to be happy with your choice, then it's a bad choice.
Regards, Amp

Not many people here been in business and had to do budgetting and accounts. Think about it.
If the guy is only making $40k a year working for himself how is an employer going to offer him $60k? He has to first make his $60k, then enough to cover his company benefits, then his costs to the company (Phone electricity, equipment, etc. Then the companies profit. The guy will have to be generating around $180 in profits for his new employer. Plus working for himself he works when ever he can and not 9 to 5, his new boss will know this and take it into consideration. The only way this happens is if the guy is in an industry that the small man cannot work in, or the big company can offer him so much more facilities to utilise his talents better. However anyone want me and Eva we're looking at offers. But don't think about anything around the $60k mark unless you are thinking a month. ![]() |

I think the only way I would take a job with a big company rather than working for myself would be if they offered a great benefits package but other than that no way! You lose the freedom you have when you work for yourself and the benefits of making your own money and not having to kiss someone else's ass for a rotten paycheck, shitty hours and being your boss's slave.

The differance between 40k and 60k is a pretty big one. If a company offered me 50% more than what I'm making as president of my own company, I'd jump all over it. Money's money, that's a pretty big fucking raise. Too much cash to pass up.
