OnlyFans, which exploded in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic, is best known as an online platform that enables porn creators to charge subscribers for content. OnlyFans takes 20% of creators' earnings.

In the year ended November 2023, the company generated $6.6 billion in revenue, according to a filing with British regulators. That is up from $375 million in 2020, and this rapid growth has attracted investor interest.

Some executives at Forest Road were part of a special purpose acquisition company that was in talks to take OnlyFans public in 2022, according to sources and filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

OnlyFans owner Leonid Radvinsky has engaged in discussions to sell the massive porn-centric content creator site at a price tag that would value the company at around $8 billion, Variety has confirmed.

Radvinsky is in talks to sell OnlyFans to an investor group led by Forest Road Co., an L.A.-based investment firm that has interests in the media and entertainment biz, at an $8 billion valuation, a source familiar with the situation said, confirming an earlier report by Reuters. The talks with the Forest Road-led group are not exclusive and there’s no timeline for when a deal might be consummated, the source added.

I saw a YouTuber claiming last night that this was in response to Google VEO 3's release, but obviously he must have been in talks before then as it was only a week ago.

However, I wonder if he knew that the writing was on the wall?

The thing about AI videos isn't that they might become 'better' or 'sexier' than the real thing, or even that people can make their own AI porn videos, it's that there will be no way to tell what is real and what isn't soon. How will a site like OnlyFans be able to verify somebody is a real human being, when even things like passports and birth certificates can easily be faked?
And even if the model is real, they will be using AI to enhance themselves or churn out content. Lots of them already use chatbots to reply to messages.

People might always pay more for a real human connection, but not if they can't believe that the person is real.
