Las Vegans, I need your help

The Las Vegas Sun has expressed an interest in hiring my girlfriend so I am trying to pick up some information about the paper and the area.

Mostly I am wondering about the area. The job would apparently be located in Henderson, NV and I am seeing a lot of housing there, too. I know absolutely nothing about the areas around Las Vegas so anything you can tell me about Henderson and around Henderson (Green Valley?) would be helpful. Is it a generally decent area? Are there any towns or neighborhoods I should be looking into or avoiding specifically? What's the general cost of living there?

Also, if you know anything about the newspaper itself, clue me in. Is it popular? Respected? It's pretty hard to get information like that from way over here in Cleveland Normally my girlfriend and I could spend a little more time doing our own research but the paper may be flying her out for an interview as early as Wednesday.

Anyway, roll the cluetrain on through for me. I appreciate it.

Thanks,
SpaceAce

Green Valley is a great area, very fast growing, etc..

Lots of growth, it is about 10-15 min from airport and just far enough away from strip.

green valley is one of the nice parts of town to live in. there are a couple of other like summerlin or henderson itself. those two are the main "suburbs" of vegas. about the paper itself i dont read the newspaper. but i think that the sun and the review journal are the two main newspapers around here. i used to get the review journal but didnt have time to read the goddamn thing. hope that helps somewhat.

Thanks, finally a reply Is Green Valley-Henderson considered one area? It seems that way on the apartment guides. I've found what seems like some pretty decent housing in that area just from searching for the last hour.

Hey, thanks for the reply. I take it, the, that Henderson and Green Valley are seperate but close together. I am just trying to get a feel for the geography.

Green Valley, Henderson, Summerlin, and Desert Shores are probably the best place in the valley to live in.

Gas here is a little more expensive than most places, and groceries are higher, but everything else seems to be priced about average.

Summerlin is quite a bit away from where she would be working though..

If you are looking for an apartment.. the camden ones are usually pretty nice..

You should fly out and take a look..

henderson is a classy area, but for me it's too far from the strip-the sun is not the best paper here- that would be the reviewjournal-the cost of living is very low in Vegas compared to almost anywhere-anything else you want to know just ask

I've been to Henderson multiple times as I have friends there. It's a great area to live in, plenty of shops, malls, etc. Just get used to the heat!

I live in Summerlin, about 20 minutes from Henderson with no traffic Traffic here is the worst, mostly because the drivers suck and can't merge for shit. Henderson is really nice, close to the strip as much as Summerlin is, close to the airport, shopping all around there...you would either want to live in Henderson or Summerlin.

The lakes is a cool place to live too....right next to summerlin and doesnt have all the stupid summerlin extra fee's. Just keep away from north vegas and away from the strip and its nice.

- fyi, if you live in summerlin and she works in Henderson, she's gonna have a 40-50 minuted drive every morning depending on traffic.

I live in Green Valley/Henderson

Middle-upper class neighborhood... low crime... great access to the major freeways.

Movie theaters, In-N-Out's, Electronics stores... all the essentials

Definitely nice, my favorite area of Vegas, and I was born and raised in the city, so I've lived in all corners.

Hey, guys. Thanks for the replies.

sexyavs, that's what I was trying to work out: how far is "A" from "B" from "C". It's most important that she be close to where she works with me being close to the strip coming in at seond place

vegas2003, is it more than 15 minutes by car or public transportation? 10-15 minutes is nothing but I'd rather not move all the way out to Nevada and not be within easy reach of the strip

Top Bucks Bill, thanks for the information. All those little details add up.

kristin, thanks. I did see some housing in Summerlin but I was mostly looking in Green Valley-Henderson since the office is apparently in Henderson.

chaffer, thanks for the offer. I may just take you up on it Cleveland-to-Vegas is a mighty piece of moving and he more questions I can get answered ahead of time, the better.

MattB, thanks for that information. She has a 40-50 minute commute right now and I really want to do better for her with this move. It'll be easier on her car and easier on my nerves if she doesn't have to fight rush hour psychos for 90 minutes each day.

SexxxyChat-T, if she ends up taking this job and we make the move, maybe you can show us around a little. Dinner and drinks on us, you can be the welcome wagon

I live in Summerlin and I love it here. Sometimes I forget I live in SinCity with all the schools and parks surrounding me. Henderson is cool because you are that much closer to Lake Mead where you can swim with the fishes.

I live off of sahara near buffalo and this is a very high income area-there are a few mansions on my block-I can get to the Palms or the orleans in 10 minutes

Thanks again for the tips, guys.

vegas2003, is buffalo a street or an area? The only housing listings I find are "East", "West", "South", "Northwest", "Southwest", "Central Las Vegas", "Downtown" and a few other ones that have been mentioned in this thread.

The way I've been picking all your brains, I may have to move to Vegas even if my girlfriend doesn't get the job

Yah, its about a 20 minute drive from where I'm at (215/95) to the strip.

Summerlin = Northwest
Henderson/Green Valley = Southeast

And speaking about going to the Palms, going to see T3 there tonight.. midnite showing... 20-25 minute drive depending on the lights.

Oh hell yah, only in Vegas, entertainment 24/7!

Don't be too worried about living close to the strip. In Vegas there are casinos everywhere, not just the strip. The strip tends to be way over priced - food is more, table limits are higher, slot machines have a lower payback and they don't comp as much. Chances are you'll be much happier with the "local" casino in your neighborhood. They're aren't as glamorous as the strip casinos but most are really, really nice and new.

Good luck on your move.

Thanks, Roxanne Looks like I really am moving. My girlfriend starts her new job there on August 21st. I know there's casinos everywhere, I just didn't want to be too far from all the action. Twenty minutes is no big deal, though.

I've found lots of places to live in Green Vallery-Henderson but I am leaning towards the East Las Vegas area because I've found some buildings there I like more. Is East alright? I'm not real picky about neighborhoods, I don't care if my neighbors all drive Porsches or Chevettes, but I don't want to live in a rundown area, either.

SpaceAce,

If you live on East side.. we will all just assume you died...

Its easier that way...

Of course there are many clubs/gangs to join, tons of free merchandise/shoplifting, pharmacy's/drug dealers are 24/7 and available at most corners!

It does have its perks!

You can't be serious. I found about a dozen buildings that were no more than 5 minutes away from the buildings I was looking at in Green Valley (MapQuest.com). Most of them are no more than 10 minutes by regular streets from where my girlfriend will be working. Some of them even border right up on the same streets. You mean to tell me it gets that bad that fast?

Examples: Dumont Avenue, East Sahara Boulevard, S. Nellis Boulevard. Those are bad neighborhoods?

Well it depends on how you rate "bad"... compared to the Bronx... it's all sunshine and rainbows, but its still pretty run down.

But the better parts of town are really Green Valley and Summerlin.

This really sucks ass. I have to leave for this move in like 18 days. How the hell am I supposed to iron all this shit out in less than three weeks? I need a website where I can punch in addresses and it tells me "No, this area sucks!" or "Yeah, you can move here."

Har, har. There's nothing wrong with Cleveland. I actually live in a suburb south of Cleveland, now, but I used to live smack in the middle of downtown.

Plus, I'm not really concerned for myself. I'm a big boy and don't care too much about where I live except that I want a reasonable chance of coming home alive when I leave the house. I want to make sure to move somewhere nicer for my girlfriend's benefit, though. The area we live in now is nice and I don't think she'd appreciate me picking a neighborhood with a lot of boarded up buildings. It's just tough because we have so little time and I know so little about Vegas. Judging by the rent and the proximity to Green Valley-Henderson, I expected East to be OK.

It's good to hear positive reviews of the newspaper. The one she works for now is a dog. Crooked as shit.

Yah, the Sun main office is right across the street from where my mom lives (GV Pkwy and the 215). In fact, I used to work in that same little corporate center a few years ago.

I'll reiterate, definitely get a place in Green Valley (SouthEast), or the South/SouthWest, your transportation will be much easier if you stay near the I-215.

Spaceace,
What do you do for a living? Maybe we can hook up when you get out here and give ARS a run for their $$$...

My designer is moving out here shortly too.

Hi,
I'm involved in quite a lot of things. The "public" faces of my business are mostly programming and a very little bit of design work but they don't make up the bulk of what I do.
