New York used to be named New Holland. But the english kicked out the Dutch and rename it to New York. There is no Old York, but there is a York.

Yes, but there isn't a Dakota so it would follow that what we call Virginia should be East Virginia.

Anyway, no one questions where New England came from so really New York, New South Wales (and South Wales is a recognized region) should make sense if you know geography ;)
