There is a fire in a building. They need exactly 7 quarts of water to put it out (don't worry about why). A man goes out to the river with the only two bukets they have: a 5 quart bucket and a 3 quart bucket. The buckets are not see-through and they have no level indicator markings. How does the man get exactly 7 quarts of water?

he fills a 5
fills the 3 completely with the 5 so its 2 and 3
he throws the 3 back in the water, and puts the 2 from the 5 in the 3

then he fills up the 5 again so its 5 and 2

there we go, 7

Fill the 5 qt. bucket first and dump it into the 3 qt. bucket, then dump that out. Then dump what's left in the 5 qt. bucket (2 qt.) into the 3 quart bucket and then fill the 5 qt. bucket back up. 2+5=7

easy.

fill the 5er. poor it into the 3 until it reaches the top of 3. now you have 2 left in the 5. empty the 3. fill it with the 2 from the 5. fill the five.

7 quarts.

The man takes the 5 quart bucket and fills it up. Then he dumps the water into the 3 quart bucket. Then he dumps the 3 quart bucket back in the river. He then dumps what's left in the 5 quart bucket (2 quarts)into the 3 quart bucket. Then he fills up the 5 quart bucket. Both buckets together now total 7 quarts: 5 quarts in the 5 quart bucket and 2 quarts in the 3 quart bucket.

The 5 quart bucket is filled and emptied into the 3 quart bucket, leaving 2 quarts.

The 3 quart bucket is then emptied, and filled with the remaining 2 quarts from the 5 quart bucket.

Then, you fill up the 5 quart bucket, and now you got 7 quarts.

I've seen Die Hard 3, too.
