Capital One Credit cards, what a fucking joke

Got one about 5 years ago, I had always paid cash for things, including a house. So I had no "good" credit. Realized today I have been getting hit with $6 a month fee that I have paid every month on time. My credit limit on the card is a whopping $200, so I call them up and tell them that in order to keep the card they need to raise my limit, $200 is basically useless. They told me the economy is bad, they can not raise anyone limits right now, regardless of how good my credit history is now, or that I have always paid on time for 5 years.

What scammers. I have no real use for a credit card, other than to increase my credit scores. A $200 a month credit card looks funny next to everything else on my report, so I told them to cancel it.

Amazing what I time for when I am sitting here reformatting my pc.

$200? How in God's name did you manage that?

I have 1 credit card and 1 debit card, Visa and MasterCard. The only thing I have ever used my Visa card for was to pay for college, and it has been my only *credit* card... I don't even remember how I got it. How do they consider limit? Income? Credit history? I'm curious now.

Discover gave me a $3.5k limit when I was 18. The economy was worse at the time.

Yeah Capital One is a joke. I cancelled my Capital One card a while ago.. started with a $200 credit limit, then after 2 years it went up to $500. Wow!

Definitely not worth keeping. I mean, you can't even buy a plane ticket to most places with that kind of a limit.

Also, you know how most companies' Platinum cards go up to $100,000 limits? If I remember correctly, Capital One's goes up to only $20,000.

I got rid of my capital one about a year ago and have never even bothered to get a new one...Even when I had it, I barely used it. I prefer to just pay cash and not worry about debt, but of course my credit rating is pretty well non-existant because of it.

I'm 40, own a home and rental property. Took me many years, but I have 1 CC (Visa) and a line of credit (Bank of Nova Scotia), each for $10k, $20K total credit. I like to keep them clear of debt, but this month I'm running it up to $10k, I'm having my tub/shower room redone (finally).

Capital one must be braindead to refuse the venerable Bradshaw, what with that huge house and spiffy car you own. Idiots!

Credit is so fucking important. Do not take it for granted, stay on top of it. I was stupid in college, got some CC's and bought shit I could not afford, including my first computer. Most of those are gone now, but I still have a few that should come off within a year. It has made getting loans/mortgages a hassle in the past. I ran my credit report again last night, and noticed some $180 charge off from the electric company that HAS TO be an error. Those small things will really bring down your score.

No, don't pay cash for everything. You'll never build up your credit. If you want credit, you HAVE to use it. Force yourself to charge things, pay the minimums, etc.

Back in 1988 I was 18 and joined the US Army...I had me a little cheap Dodge car worth about $800 bucks lol...So these bank one people magically sent me a CC with a $2000.00 dollar limit...hell I about shit myself.

What you guys think I did with that money?

Bought a new car? Hell No...I went to the sound shop and spent the whole fucking 2 on a sweet sound system to push that peice of shit down the road.

Of course I could not make the payment on the dang thing...after it doubled and compounded and was sold to a few other companies...I ended up paying a little over $4700 hundred dollars. I just got that all paid for a few years ago.

Never use CC

Or if you halfta make sure to pay your bills...once you loss that credit it is gone for awhile.

Oh yeah, my credit line on that card is now 10k, also have another card with a 20k limit on it. I didn't even have to build up the 20k one. I went into the bank to open a new account and they asked me if I wanted it

Brad,

With cap one you can usually just call the toll free # on the back of the card and get a line increase via there automated system.

I got one of there cards about 6 years ago, they started me off at like 1500.00 or something, now it's up to 9k, which is actually still pretty small. Discover sent me a new card and it was 15k from the get go..

Cap one is ok, but there interest rates suck.. We have there business miles one card which is not bad and gives us some free trips.

Overall for Customer Service, biz, etc. Amex is the only way to go

the other thing that will kill your credit score is using more then 50% of the aval. credit on any account. So if you have more then 100 bucks on that card it will drop your score. If you need to get your credit going get a secured card for 2500. you will need to deposit 2500 in their bank account, but if you use the card and always pay on time to will show up in your report as a good line of revolving credit. The apply for a normal card in a year. My credit is not great, I have had to work on it for a couple years.

Pay the minimums and you'll be paying off that new computer you paid for with a credit card for 10 years. Pay above the minimum. Get a loan and pay it off the next month.

Yeap they have sent me pre-approved letters for the last few years, so right before Xmas last year I bit and accepted the card.

They gave me a decent limit, but the card was supposed to be free. I got a statement from a couple months later from them saying that I had a overdue balance and that I was charged an extra $25 for the late fee.

I NEVER USED THE CARD!

I called them up bitched for a min or two, found out that they charged me a setup fee of $49.95 on the FREE CARD!

I told them to cancel that shit and I wasnt paying for anything because it said free. The rep cancelled it and I told them to send me a letter saying that it was cancelled and that I didnt owe them anything. They did.

Never again will I use them.

Well yeh you want a few things. But most young people go overboard when you start doing well and everyday you get another offer in the mail. Before you know it you'll be a credit card millionaire literally with a combined $1 Mil line. That can get you into serious fucked up time.

When you know things are all paid for you sleep better at night.

I've had 'so so' experiences with Capitol One as well...

personally my favorite cards to deal with are either the Sears or the Chase-Manhattan cards...

the rest usually have something I don't like...their support, their rates, etc....

I've got 3 and a Best Buy card, need to cancel one of them. Don't like having so many open lines of credit.

Brad.. are you saying that in 5 yrs.. they never raised your limit?

That is crazy... I don't use cc as much anymore, I only have like 4 of them...but at one point about 5 yrs ago. i had like 12 cards and had a total open limit of about 300k bux.. very tempting.... and very dangerous...

Im keeping myself in check... Now I have closed most of my cc and have less than 10K in credit... cuz I dont want to run the risk of fucking up...

And the other tip, never give a GF a card under your account with her name.

You will regret it one day if the relationship ends.

If you cancel a card with any history on it, it actually lowers your credit rating.. You should see if you can get it back ;)

Oh, and that $10k line of credit I mentioned?... they only charge me 1% over prime. I was paying like 4% interest on any balances I had all last year :D

This year it's at like just over 5%. Sure beats the shit out of Visa's 18%.

Find a good bank, get them to set you up a line of credit with a CC attached to it, and negotiate a good interest rate on it. If you're a home-owner and you have some equity in it and some other equities/collateral, you deserve a solid line of credit at a good interest rate.

credit cards are fucked anyway. I got my first one when I was 14. all my limits are way over 20,000 . But I applied for a discover last year and the assholes gave me like a 500 limit. I called them up and was like hello ...you see my credit report? 805 fico score . they still wouldn't raise it so I closed it, they are retards.

I got flat turned down for a credit limit increase today as well.
I've been paying those rat bastards on time every time for over 2 years now, and I have a zero balance on the card.

Maybe they have a point with the economy and all, but in 2 years they've never raised my limit, doesn't make any sense.

Credit cards, besides building your credit, also offer you MUCH better protection against fraud than using cash.

I've only had to file a couple of complaints, but both times it was companies that had not delivered what they said they were and both times I got all my money back through the CC company (and one was around $7K, so it mattered a lot). I would have had to file a lawsuit in order to get that money back had I paid cash.

I have several bonus CC's - one gets free miles (earned about 10 tickets over the past 6 or so years), once is a rebate card, one gets 5% off gas purchases, and I just got an Amazon card that gives me discount off my Amazon purchases. I put everything on the bonus cards - my server bills, grocery store, drug store, utility bills, etc.

Unless they are 0% for a time, I ALWAYS pay them in full the minute I get the bill. For the 0%, I stick the money in a MM account (crappy earnings, but at least it's something), then pay it off the month before the 0% expires.

Using CC can be VERY beneficial, but you DO have to be careful if you don't pay attention to your spending habits.

i personally like discover.

their security is pretty tight, they ask you like 5 questions
before they'll tell you anything about your account, and
sometimes they just randomly ask you questions throughout
the phone call to verify your identity.

what i really love about discover is the 1.5% cash back on
everything i buy.

what sucks about them is that not every place accepts
discover.

Bradshaw:

Dump the assholes! Looks like Capital One is just another wannabe issurer.

I HATE credit cards - but love debit cards. Even then, I avoid using em, - just draw a lump of cash direct from the bank with no "fees". Nobody seems to have a problem with cash

A while back I had four Amex gold cards (one for each family member).. until I discovered they were charging around $200 annual fees on em - they were scrapped damned quick.

It's a pity folks seem to be levered into a position, particulary in the US, to use plastic as a method of increasing their credit rating - that smells like a con by those who have an "interest".
