Traditionally American voters

...do not like having the same party in control of the Congress and the Whitehouse at the same time.

This last election they screwed up and allowed this to happen. Being that there are more Democrats than Republicans...do you think that next time around Democrats will come out in force to vote...or will the same voter apathy prevail???

People don't give a shit. It's a "me me" society. Personally, I vote for who I feel is the right person for the job and their party is the LAST reason I would pick them.

When you vote do you consider what party is in the White House and what party is in control of Congress?

No.

I have been a democratic the majority of my voting life until the last few years..

This last election I thought neither BUSH or GORE were qualified to be President

It largely depends on who the final dem candidate is, but yes they will come out to vote same as in 92. However it will be useless, Arnold will win California which will facilitate securing California electorate votes which will slide Bush right back at the top of the food chain.

We can only pray the American voter wakes up before that disaster happens.

I'm not speaking out of partisanship. I'd be equally opposed to the Demo's controlling all three branches at once.

Are you opposed to a party controlling both the White House and Congress?

Yes.

Colin spoke yesterday about a law of conservation of idiocy. Good idea, but it only works if the adversarial checks and balances system is uncorrupted and one side doesn't have too much power.

Is the status quo better. Constant opposing forces butting heads getting nothing done?

The federal govt. is a fucking joke.

They've so oversteped the authority granted to them in the constitution it is not even funny. The founding fathers are rolling over in their graves.

The feds have completely usurped nearly all rights bestowed upon the states -- and by extension usurped the rights of self rule from citizens of those states.

The left let it happen and now it's coming back to haunt us all.

Yes. The adversarial form of Government works best when its very difficult for the extremists on either side to get anything done. The nuts on both sides then cancel each other out and the middle rules.

There would be nothing to worry about if the federal government was limited to its intended scope.

Things get done but because of the "opposing forces" it is not to the satisfaction of either party...but for the most part keeps policy/laws in the middle.

The Executive branch nor the Congress nor the States can do anything that is outside the scope of the Constitution as interpreted by the Supreme Court.

Speculation ahead. People seem to be quite pessimistic over the state of the world and especially the economy even in good times. Voters may tend to cast their vote against the party of the president in the mid-term elections more often than not because of that pessimism.

The statistic that confirms your statement is that in only three elections in the past 100 years has the party of the white house actually gained votes in the House.

Interesting statistics from the 2002 mid-term elections.

54% voted split-ticket
19% voted all-Republican
21% voted all-Democrat
(Remainder were not sure or refused to answer)

Gee thanks -- I didn't know.

Please.

We all know there's no such thing as legislating from the bench via judicial activism.

What is your speculation...will the Democrats turn out in force next election...or will the same voter apathy exist?

Difficult to say. I think there will be a slight advantage in voter turnout to the Democrats this time around. However, I think the swing voters will determine the election.

I think the answer to who will win the election is far beyond the point of speculation right now. The opposing candidate hasn't even been chosen yet. Too much time in between here and election time. There are just too many events with the potential to impact election day voting.

The state of the economy is probably most important to most voters. All other factors being equal, if the economy is strong Bush wins in a landslide. If it's about the same as it is now, it will be a close race with a slight advantage to Bush. If it's worse, Bush is in trouble.

Will a strong leader emerge from the Democrats? What kind of campaign will they run? Who will the Democratic campaign manager be? Will they get down and dirty with Rove? What world events will occur (terrorism, Iraq, North Korea, Osama, Saddam)?

Osama and Saddam make it even more interesting. Most Americans view Afghanistan and Iraq as done and won. Finding Saddam is the final resolution necessary for most everyone else to feel that way about Iraq. Same with Osama.

I agree, those 2 are huge variables. Osama & co. more than Saddam I think.

The Federal Gov has TOTALLY exceeded it's powers.....look at the 10th amendment:

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.

Mainly because of the left's desire in this country for a people that are dependant on a big goverment to take care of them...we now have a fed gov that has gone WAY beyond the limits set by the 10th.

I really believe that the democrats would have no problem winning this election if they put up a somewhat strong candidate. But by the looks of things this is not going to happen. Personally, I think that the republicans screw up the economy and the democrats fix it.
