I find that...
if you leave ICQ and other instant messenger services turned off, you become much more productive. Even if you aren't actually using the messenger but still have it on, it becomes a major distraction.
If you're having troubles meeting your deadlines and goals, turn off the messengers for a day, or even a 6 hour period and you'll see positive results. Unfortunately, I need to keep my ICQ on at all times but I did leave AIM off today and am pleased with the results.

Good advice, and I agree completely. Sometimes I wonder why I turn the damned things on. Also, it always seems like everything's quiet for a few hours and then BAM! 8 people want to chat at once. I've been leaving IM off more often lately, definitely more productive.
