so hes supposed to keep an eye in the air for a fly ball coming down on him and also look down to see if any players are going for the ball?

The fan was the spark. That is exactly what I am arguing.

According to CNN the guy was 26 years old.

"To add to the hurt, that fan who kept Alou from catching the ball hit by Luis Castillo and kept the rally going was wearing a Cubs hat. Once the Marlins broke loose, people around the 26-year-old fan starting hurling beers in his direction and he was escorted out by security with a jacket over his face."

If that guy had a job, he's been fired.
If that guy has family, he's been disowned.
And lastly, he just signed a death warrant with every fan in the city. He better leave as soon as possible before his name/address are publicly released

I flipped on WGN the moment the game ended to see thier post-game wrap up on the local (Chicago) news...they showed "exclusive video" of the guy being escorted out of the stadium by security. The guy is about 5' 1" and judging by the video tape of him leaving, he's about to be 6' under.

People were throwin programs, beverages, you name it - in his direction. People were shoving the security trying to get at the guy. The guy himself kept pulling his jacket over his face to try and hide...too late.

It wasn't called interference...it may or may not have been. But if the guy reached over the wall and touched the ball it was interference. And looking at the pics/vids...that's a real close call. Someone with some hi-tech 3-d rendering program will surely draw planes, lines and graphs in the very near future to fuel the controversy. Either way...the guy was likely a Cubs fan. He likely lives in Chicagoland area. His life is forever altered by this event. And...though I live in Florida and love the Marlins...I love the Cubbies more and always will.

This play undoubtedly changed the entire game. Who knows what would have happened if the ball was caught. Would the error have happened? Would the next batter have struck out? No one will ever know. The one thing I am fairly certain of is that we haven't heard the last of the guy who may have very well changed the fate of the Cubs' season. Whether it's an ass whipping or worse...this guy will be heard from again. That's Chicago man...I lived there. I have seen terrible things happen to people for a lot less!

I hope he lives in mental torment for many years to come - but in all honesty...I hope he stays safe.

I'm surprised he wasn't killed before leaving the stadium. Having grown up in that neighborhood and having worked at both Cubby Bear and Sluggers right across the street from Wirgley Field I can tell you drunken Chicago fans can be dengerous. I've seen people beaten half to death on the street after a game for far less.

The same thing happened in NY a few years back. Some little kid reach out and caught the ball. The Yankees won the game the the series turned at that point. The kid was a hero, on the cover of all the papers including the New York Times.

I read an interesting quote this morning in the Miami Herald where Grandpa Jack was saying "I don't think that was the turning point in the game."

I'm a Marlins fan but cmon I think everyone in the world saw that was a turning point. Alou makes that catch and now there are two outs, Cubs up 3-0. Everything from pitching to running to batting strategy changes. Fans get louder, the pressure on Prior is alot less.

Anyone who has watched sports knows momentum is spelled with a capital M, especially in pressure situations.

The truth of the matter is that this play did change the course of this game. And in all honesty this poor guy is probably sitting at home. Hasn't slept all night and is just chomping at the bit all day for tonights game to get started so he can watch the Cubs win.

If the Cubs win tonight this will all be just a bad memory. If they do not. He should pack up all his shit and move to South FL and get a Job with the Marlins. Cause his life in Chicago is OVER.

Rally-kindling instead of rally-killing: The Bobble doesn't quite rise to the mythic level of Buckner-esque proportions, but That Fan was merely guilty of amateurish behavior; what's the pro's excuse?
If this is what Cubs fans are made of then they are more candy assed little bitches then I ever imagined. Dont blame your teams choke on an excited fan. Don't try and sell your bullshit momentum stories here. It doesn't fly. If one fan trying to get a souvenier was enough to rattle one of your ace pitchers, your bullpen, and your short stop then you deserve to lose.

I am a Red Sox fan and not once, not ever have I blamed Bill Buckner. You need to grow up and place the blame where it is deserved on the players that choked.

Your not the atypical Red Sox fan then. Hell, Buckner had to move because his kids were getting beat up regularly at school after that series. Everytime choking in the playoffs is mentioned, Buckner's name is referenced.

What everyone in Boston did was just as inexcusable as what will more than likely happen to this poor guy. The Buckner debacle was in Game 6 just like last night. What people choose not to remember is that the game was already tied. If he makes the play the Sox dont win they go to extra innings. And they just like the Cubs have a game 7 to win. They didn't. They were weak mind pussies that did not deserve to win. If the Cubs can't win with Kerry Wood then they dont deserve to win either. To place two lost games on one fan will be more inexcusable than what happened in Boston.

If I remeber right

Buckner just made the most glaring mistake

The score was tied before he did that, despite what everyone says now that wouldn't have won the series for the Sox

but not to change the subject on the thread, smart fans know, interfere if it's your home team at the plate and get out of the way and let your team make the catch.

Oh damn WG.

I'm wondering if they escorted him out of the stadium or took him off somewhere to beat his ass.

Hi Kat! LOL, According to smoking gun, he didn't reply to his office voice mails, his home phone line has been disconnected... sounds like he's been taken care of
