When the Malibu Calabasas fires happened about 11 years ago it was heading straight towards our house in Calabasas and I was frantically driving home to get my dogs but the traffic was dead stopped on the Ventura Freeway and I just had to sit there looking at that ominous cloud of smoke thinking the worst.

Luckily the winds shifted and took it in the opposite direction before it got to our neighborhood.

LA is one of the riskiest places to live.

not much else one can do. people are literally trying to defend off fires from their homes until they have to leave.

this is the worst I have been through being here.

the air just smells burnt. ash is falling from thje sky and its abnormally hot here in the valley.

fires on both sides and throughout the state.

this type of thing makes you think about certain things differently.

ive lost a family member to fire so I guess i take it a little more to heart but man this shit is cruel and without mercy.

As a Volunteer Fire Fighter myself if you think the garden hose is rediculous your sadly mistaken ...

Many many fire fighters are near that fire now with nothing more than an ax or a water tank strapped to thier back (Indian Tank is the professional term for this).

I have stopped many fires from spreading with the use of a simple fire extinguisher or a garden hose.

Dry heat and dryed out trees.

I remember once it felt like the hottest day ever in the valley. I put a temperature gauge on our driveway and it shot up to 134 degrees.

I cracked an egg on the driveway and it started to cook.

That's how hot it gets out there.

i cant speak for san diego here but.. all the fires are burning along the base of the mountains and hills which is where all the big expensive homes are. the biggest house in my city, also the highest up the hill, burned down saterday night. its not your average sized homes that are being burned down for the most part... its all the big flashy homes.

I read 2 of the first people to die (Grand Prix fire) was because of cardiac arrest. One guy had a heart attack and collapsed while watching his home burn down, and the other died while in transport to the hospital.

The ash that is falling seems to be affecting more people than I thought. Alot of people stayed indoors this weekend.

i know that firefighters are in the front line of the situation but i guess that picture doesn't really appeal to much to the affected casualties since it might send a wrong message to the public.

True, if you just see the picture by itself. But I bet they were originally accompanied by captions explaning the situation.

One thing you see over and over is homeowners trying to save their homes with a garden hose. They refuse to leave. Sometimes firemen will run up and take over for safety's sake.
