DVD burning and copying

My new neighbor thinks he is some elite hacker and comes over every few days and gives me some DVDs he copied from blockbuster rentals to watch. The thing is they are all choppy and shit when you watch them. Is this how it is or does he just not really have a clue what he's doing.

I have kinda held off getting a DVD burner as I wasn't real suer what standard they are going to end up going with. Has anyone else noticed any problems like this ?

BS on the exact copies.. but the program does have decent compression. you really can't tell the quality has been lowered. even with Lord of the Rings: Two towers the compression was 40% loss and i still couldn't tell.

DVD's you find at blockbust are DVD-9 format with total capacity of over 9 GB ... DVD-r's only have 4.7 ! 1-1 isn't possible unless the movie is smaller than 4.7.

My new laptop has a DVD burner in it but I don't even know where to begin to learn about copying movie DVD's or Xbox games.
