yes it does. If you drive a car at 40 mph for a day, can you go 1000 miles? ... if you know the mbps, you know the MAXIMUM gigabytes that can be pumped through that pipe, then using averages and peaks, you can figure out about what you can get out of it realistically, so yes it IS helpful.
