Why not go with Divx?

Been looking at it, some really nice stuff and they got a free player for download. To make a site all divx for video clips do you think that would fly?

Well as long as you advise the member how to download and install i dont see why not.

But keep in mind most surfers arent the brightest so you might encounter alot of support emails with "I can see the movies" and so on.

A couple of reasons:

1. people don't like downloading new software to their PC
2. I thought I heard that the Divx people had an issue with copyrights (this was a few years ago, so I may remember incorrectly)

I agree, and make sure you solve their problems fast, or otherwise you will loose members. DivX has some advantages, you save BW and you can offer your members higher quality.

Whatever you do, don't ask that question to your hosting company

True.
We have xvid videos on one of our sites as well as wmv and mpeg formats clearly available, and many complain how they can't see them (even though we have the codec and instructions on our site).

.. so don't overestimate the surfer when it comes to 'hi-tech' stuff.

the people at projectmayo are corporate shills, i wouldn't entrust my business plan to them... no telling when something that was once free will become an extortion technique. there numbers haven't been all that great this last year either...

i have no sympathy at all for people who decided to take a freely available *pirating* tool and try to build a business around it..

Idiots....

DIVX is Proprietary. Webmasters know investing in proprietary tech is always a backstabber. So the smart webmasters above the food chain are at least paying attention still.

DIVX sole purpose was to cash in on the DVD Format.
DIVX is ad ware with the "Free" player module. The "Free Player for a period of time was not available for download.
Ask Circuit city about DIVX

"DivX is essentally a warez format for DVDs. It uses MPEG-4 to compress a DVD movie down to approximately CD size. There are many such movies available through gnutella, among other places." -Charles M. Hannum

MPEG-1 is by far the most popular video format with the people who count most - porn surfers. Takes some skill to get good quality at a reasonable file size but i've some guys who do a masterful job.

DivX wants the adult market to itself, they have their own adult movie site. If you are using DivX format get ready to one day hear from their lawyers and you'll have to re-encode all your movies. Use XviD instead to save the grief.

I don't like DivX because the movies have to completely download before u can watch them. My connection is fast enough that I can watch MPEGs and WMV's as they download.

Anyone know the difference between slander and libel?

You have poor grammar and also know nothing of what you speak.

What are the numbers over at DivX? I am happy to report that all of our numbers are fantastic.

We don't need your sympathy, but you might want to check your facts.

people can view mpeg without downloading codecs..so that's a big plus. You can pull off using xvid or something in a members area (like deluxepass) but i wouldn't recommend using it on a tgp or gallery.

Avi is another option but can't be streamed

Point #2 is completely truthful. Progressive download is only available for preotcetd content in DivX. Look for good things here soon.

For point one, I think you should contact us. My info is below.

DivX does not run any adult sites. We do have a site that links to some of our VOD partners. DivX is a technology company. We aren't in the content or marketing business and don't wat to be.

Xvid is not legal unless you pay the MPEG-LA fees. I know our lawyers and let me say you are more likely to be sued for running Xvid on your site than DivX.

There are pros and cons of all of these. Hit me up with rumors and hear say and I will try to clear the air.

LOL.... Dude, get a new player... they cost $40

but also look at all of the DVD player showing up at wal-mart and amazon.com the play the new DivX.

We can help insure DivX on your site will play on these players and help setup affiliate programs so you can sell these players on your site.

Customers can download the movies and watch them on their TV.

Welcome back from 2001!

DivX has been named as one of the top 100 private technology firms in the world 2 years running.

This isn't an empty award. These determinations are made by companies like KPMG and Red Herring.

How is DivX cashing in on the DVD format? That doesn't make sense?

DivX Pro Encoder is Ad-supported, and we hate it. We really hate it, and trust me when I say, look for us to put our money where our mouth is in the next 30 days.

The player isn't ad-supported and has never been unavailable.

Seriously people.... drop me a line when you hear junk like this.

lol, aside from the fact that i could give a rats ass about grammar on a web forum i do know that not many paysites have coughed up your licensing fees to utilize Divx tech, i'm sure you've nailed a few contracts (Homegrown, etc.) but not many can justify the $10,000US i was quoted in 2002 for lifetime license (on a per domain basis i was told) when .Wmv technology is freely available and doesn't require our customers to install a secondary player/codec to use.

i will admit that the bandwidth prices i was quoted for your VOD service were pretty fair back in 2002, i think you guys were serving off Qwest at the time..

Oh yeah... one last thing....

If you are going to use DivX, surfers don't have to download the whole codec. Try this link instead -

http://download.divx.com/player/DivXPlayerInstaller.exe

This just installs the player.

Man, hit me up on IM then. This is 2004... the year of the kinder gentler DivX. We have signed a few partners such as Homegrown, Evil Angel, Hustler, Gamelink, Top Bucks, Platinum Bucks, New Sensations, Video Team, Hot Movies, Adult DVD Empire, Adult DVD Explorer, Blue Door, Effex, Shane's World, Kick Ass, JM, Anabolic, Diabolic, Legend, Metro, but that is on the VOD side.

I think if you drop us a line about paysite options, we might be able to make something that works for you. Seriously... you will be suprised

fair enough... i will hit you guys up this week and see what your new offerings are, if things are that much "gentler" than your 2002 quotes then i will take a look at them again..

you should rather use the free Xvid codec instead of Divx..
I hears Adultbouncer had MAJOR legal trouble with the divx group...
