strange FTP login problem...

looking for some help here....

today when i tried to FTP into my websites i get timeout error upon trying to login. the problem seems to be only with my computer/ISP. i talked to the ISP (sbc) and they said no problems that they are aware of. i talked to my webhost (ISPrime) and again, no problems on their end. a friend of mine just logged into my sites with no problem. therefore, it must be something on my computer or my ISP. i haven't changed anything since i logged in last on Saturday so i'm stumped as to what to look for. any suggestions?

Turn on/off passive mode in your settings.

I went through this last month.. I was unable to access my FTP for a week . It wasnt a problem on the webhosts side.. it wasnt a problem with my ISP

It was some weird problem with one of the routers in between point A and point B... finally got fixed but was making me run in circles trying to fix somehting that wasnt my problem.

good luck

i've tried FTPing in via Dreamweaver, WS FTP and via the Dos prompt....all 3 time out on me so that's why it can't be a software issue....

i don't have a router - the DSL line goes directly into my etheret port on the computer.

i do have McAfee firewall running - it has been running for months with no apparent conflict. but to be sure i disabled it, tried to log in and again same timeout errors.

the problem looks to be an ISP block but if SBC says there isn't one i have no idea where else to look....

Try using telnet to go to port 21, and see if you can connect.

SBC says they are not blocking the ports...

anyone know of any program/website that can test my ports 20/21 to tell me if they are blocked?

okay - i figured it out but have no clue why this just started...i have the firewall that is built into Windows XP Professional enabled...it has been since i got the computer almost a year ago. I've never had a problem logging into websites via FTP before today...maybe there was some sort of Windows update that changed something in the firewall. anyway, i back in!
