Reward offered for information about Seattle arsons

03:16 PM PDT on Tuesday, August 3, 2004

From KING Staff and Wire Reports

SEATTLE - A $15,000 reward is being offered for information to catch the person responsible for a string of about a dozen arsons in Seattle.

Federal agents are helping Seattle fire investigators as they look into the arson spree that?s burned numerous buildings across Seattle. The number of arsons totaled 12 ? six set on Sunday and another six Monday.

There were no new fires reported Tuesday, but firefighters and police were patrolling streets with the goal of putting a stop to the arson spree.

The investigation also has some fresh eyes. Investigators with ATF?s elite national response team has been brought in to scrutinize one of the biggest fires, a construction site on Phinney Ridge. They?ll be gathering evidence that might shed clues into the string of fire that has caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.

The Seattle Fire Department said there have been at least 12 arsons since early Sunday. Two more are considered suspicious and under investigation..

Fire Department spokeswoman Helen Fitzpatrick said small fires were set at two garages and on a piece of furniture on a parking strip. Additional target sites include a condominium complex, a cafe, two homes, a garage and a car dealership, mostly in neighborhoods in north Seattle.

Whoever is starting the fires, say officials, uses whatever is lying around to set them off.

?And if we get complacent like this lumber pile here, things can happen,? said Chris Greene, Seattle firefighter

Mayor Greg Nickels, Fire Chief Gregory Dean and Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske told a news conference Sunday that police would be keeping an eye on construction sites throughout the city. Police also urged people to pick up any trash or other combustible material from their property.

?We?re not going to speculate on who this might be,? Nickels said. ?But we will find them and we will bring them to justice.?

And the danger to people may be increasing.

?The potential for loss of life is certainly very great,? Kerlikowske said.

The string of fires began when a fire broke out late Saturday night at a University District home. Three people were there when the fire started; two jumped 12 feet from the back roof to escape and another climbed out a basement window, but no one was hurt, Fitzpatrick said.

The fire spread to the roof of a neighboring house before firefighters doused it. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Less than an hour later, firefighters responded to the fully engulfed condominium complex under construction on Phinney Ridge, near Woodland Park Zoo. Witnesses reported flames leaping 100 feet into the air from the structure, which took up the better part of a city block.

Firefighters evacuated people from nearby homes, some of which had paint blistered by the heat.

The structure remained unstable Sunday and officials were unable to investigate a potential cause or estimate the cost of the damage, which was extensive.

Fitzpatrick said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was called in to assist in the investigation.

Five deliberately set fires were subsequently reported early Sunday in the Lake City area. Cafe Long on Lake City Way sustained $200,000 in damage, and damage at a Ford dealership near the cafe was estimated $30,000.

A fire in a garage caused $20,000 in damage, Fitzpatrick said, and debris fires at two construction sites totaled $2,000.

Bellevue, Kirkland and Shoreline fire departments pitched in to help.

?The amount of fire activity put a severe strain on our resources,? Fitzpatrick said.

Arsonists have also been at work in the Everett area recently, with two deliberately set fires reported in a multifamily apartment building Sunday morning. No one was injured in those fires.

Anyone with information about the fires is asked to call the Arson hotline at 1-800-55ARSON.

KING's Arturo Santiago and the Associated Press contributed to this report.
