Why cold fusion or jsp? Programming costs more, and the results won't be much different from php or mod_perl.

Only reason being, the sites I have looked at that do what she wants to do:

http://www.delias.com
http://www.shopbop.com

are all written in those languages... I THINK. Im lost when it comes to programming.

U guys think php would be the best solution for this?

Ehm... yeah?!
A good cfm or jsp program will generally literally cost you 5 times as much as the same program in php. cfm even is slower than php in most cases, and jsp is faster but with the speed of servers these days that shouldn't make a huge difference.

And don't forget... there are already tons of goods open source scripts in php ( http://www.oscommerce.com/ ), which is quite different in cfm and jsp.

if money were not an issue, what would you use?

Yes because with Cold Fusion you need to pay for a Cold Fusion server and that's more $$$$$

You could propably do the same with PHP...

But what do you exactly need? You need the site to be static or dynamic, you want an admin area to be able to change the site, products, news...?

Yes, add products, remove products, change prices, news/sales, etc..

In my opinion, the single biggest reason people use cfm and jsp is that they miscalculated how the market would develop a few years ago.

cfm has some benefits compared to php, to be fair... better error handling, better search functions, but ultimately it lacks the flexibility of php. It's also *supposed* to be faster, but I've never actually seen it work faster than php in practice.

It is often said about jsp that those who use it have more money than sense, and that's pretty much true. It's an entirely different scene and tradition, but one that is doomed imo.

Personally, I prefer C, mod_perl and PHP. C is fastest, ofcourse, but programming takes long and debugging is a pain in the ass. Also, there are way less skilled programmers available for it than for PHP.
PHP is easy, fast, flexible, there are tons of programmers for it and the amount of open source scripts that are available is insane. It lacks the speed of C and mod_perl though, and in all honesty it isn't a real "programming" language.

For most sites I'd still go with PHP, simply because making changes is easy, and there is tons of stuff available when I need it.

Custom-coded from scratch by an experienced programmer and properly tested it could range anywhere from $1k to $$$$$ depending on how complex you want it. A few thousand bucks seems likely, if you keep it pretty simple.

Edit: when using something like oscommerce it will be very little if you only need a bit of customization.

If price was no issue, i'd have imadigan do it, probably in asp.net (php would be fine, but ASP is nice for this sorta thing)
