Who Shops At Wal-Mart???

I watched a special on Wal-Mart last night on CNBC. They were interviewing the CEO and he said that they have 1,450,000 employees. Talk about a payroll huh???

Anybody else see that special?

Wal-Mart is essentially the boss of every manufacturer there. They basically command the prices, and if you can't sell it at a price they decide, then they'll move onto your competitor.

Wal-mart is huge, they let people pay them to park their campers overnight in their parking lot, they are going to, or maybe already have made apartments on the top of their stores, so old people dont ever have to leave.. and are also going to start selling cars. it's crazy, but if you are high up on the ladder at wal-mart you pretty much have it made if you just keep climbing..or have a lot of stock .

yea its sad, all those family owned businesses that have been there forever cant last too long against the walmarts, they are just too cheap and the little shops can compete.

If a Mom and Pop store can't survive on service and product, then yes, they will go under.

There's been a Walmart in my town for years and I and many others continue to patronize the small stores that offer good service. People don't always want "cheap" or no one would shop at Saks, buy Rolexes or drive Mercedes.

If a small store offers crappy service and product, then yes, they will go under. That would have happened if Walmart opened or not.

We don't have wal-mart stores here in Fortaleza. I went to their first store in Brazil once a few years ago.

Wal-mart bought some months ago a big "supermarket network" (?) here, they'll probably change the brand in the long term.

There's a 24 Wal-Mart super center store about 2 minutes from my offices.

I love it. Great prices and you can go in at 3AM without the crowds.

I do all of our grocery shopping there. For some reason their meats look fresher and are packaged better and I spend less money there than at a regular grocery store. For a family of 5 that weekly grocery bill can eat ya alive ...hehe

And yea, our Super Walmart has managed to shut down Kmart and other stores in our area. Noone can touch their prices so they go under :-

Super Walmart is great for taking elderly relatives, they can do all their shopping at once

With the exception of those things I can only get at Walmart I do most of my shopping at closer by local stores.

Walmart is amazing, they bring jobs to hundreds of out of work/unemployed people everytime they open a store. Plus they offer their customers the best possible prices, which lowers inflation.

I love Walmart, I buy tons of DVD's, sports stuff and tech stuff from them everytime I go

We call Wal Mart "Wally World".

They have so many fucking employees because they don't hire anyone full time in order to cut down on employee expenses - no healthcare, less benefits, etc. What a horrible company.

And they decide to edit the CDs I buy there?

Hell no. I never shop at Wal Mart.

DH.. what you don't realize though for those jobs they bring to communities.. they prey on people that basically have no other option. Single mothers that have to work in the evening when they have family to watch their kids or even parents where there are two in the home but they can't afford child care and have to work different shifts. They pay them virtually nothing and give them like a 20 cent per hour raise once a year. And that's if they get a decent evaluation. I know people that have been there for 5 years and barely make $8.00 an hour. Sound unbelievable? It's not. Even 7 11 pays more than that. They have built their empire on breaking the backs of their employees.

The insurance is horrible also, they make enough money that they don't qualify for state help because their employers offer it for them but they can't afford to take their kids to the doctor when they're sick. Often the employees are worked 15 hour days several days a week and then when they are about to go onto overtime they are sent home early so they can't collect time and a half. They are run into the ground and then stepped on.

Most of the people working there don't have other options either due to lack of education or other conflicts that restrict them from working a 9 to 5 job. It's hard for some to understand because they aren't in the position of having to scrape by. I will not patronize wal mart after i've seen the way they treat their employees.

Oh yeah and those of you that like their meat.. wanna hear something nice? I know a lady that was the meat department manager. They switched to pre packaged meat about 3 1/2 or 4 years ago. The meat comes from a central warehouse without an expiration date on it. Instructions from the company are that it has a shelf life of 6 months. Want to know how they accomplish that? They inject and bathe the meat with a chemical compound that is the same ingredients as SOAP. Ever wondered why the meat has bubbles around the meat when you cook it.. that's why.

as far as offering the best prices.. nope.. they could do much better. Average markup is 30-60% and sometimes as high as 80%

Rochard is right on track also.. they have this rule where in order to be considered full time you have to work 36 hours a week or more but when it comes time to schedule the computer won't schedule anyone for more than 34 during off peak times. Therefore, they don't have to provide insurance for these employees.

How do I know all this? I used to be in management there.. Thought I would grab a piece of the american pie and work my way up and retire with a nice fat stock account. After seeing how they treat employees and being locked in the back room when union reps came calling so I wouldn't tell them what the real story was I told them that they could take Sam Walton's corpse and shove it up their asses....

Here is the way I see it, be it right or wrong this is my personal opinion.

We live in a free country and people have the right to work where ever they like. It's not like they are being drafted into walmart slavery! LOL! They have the conscious decision to either apply for a job or not to. They knew that this was not a high paying job when they applied.

The simple fact is that even though Walmart is a market leader in the retail industry they can simply not afford to give each one of their employees illustrious $20 an hour jobs or huge stock bonuses. Their jobs (for the most part) do not entail anything that require the skillset that a $20 an hour job with stock bonuses would entail.

As for insurance, at least they HAVE some kind of insurance. If those employees were working with some small company they would not be offered ANY kind of insurance and would have to foot the bill entirely themselves. Hence it's better than nothing ;)

Walmart has lowered inflation, given 1.5 million people around the world jobs, stimulated the economy and given customers a great experience (well I think it's pretty good!).

Anyways just my on the matter

DH

I think you're missing the point. When the Walmart comes to a small town, they kill most of the other local jobs. If people want a job, they have no choice but to work for Walmart.

As far as a $20.00 per hour wage, I don't think anyone would expect that kind of wage at any entry-level position. The point is that Walmart refuses to let an employee work a full 40 hours per week. This move denies employees any rights to benefits and you can forget about overtime pay.

As I recall, when Oprah stayed in Amarillo, TX for the big beef trial, she shopped at Target.
