For the DV cam tapes the Sony DSR-20 is a good machine and handles both the large and mini dvd tapes.

Isn't there something smaller and simpler available that just accepts the mini-dv tapes? It seems like these shouldn't be very expensive since they do nothing but move data.

Marc do you not have a minidv camera at all? If not you could get one fairly cheap if you want, I dont know of another way. Most DV cameras have a firewire or USB port on it to pull the data off. You can use pinnacle studio and a firewire or usb cable & card (depending on the camera) to pull it off. You can also use a Dazzle or something but that is just going to basically let you hook up an old camera with RCA jacks to a pc. My minidv cam broke otherwise I would hook you up with it. I think you can probably get one from ebay for cheap, SAMS club and the like usually have some around you for about $300 for the minidv cams.

Bump...I use a camera now but it would be nice to have a MiniDV "tape deck". Would be cool if someone made an internal tape deck that would fit a standard drive bay.

The motor in mine just went out. It "drags" the tape through. Looking for a cheap way to pull the video until Santa comes.

Come to think of it , I have an old IBM server with a backup tape drive. Could this work? Is it the same tape?

Looks like sony did it and it flopped, the model was the DVR-100

Oh, and btw, that tape drive is most probably a DAT drive, won't work with miniDV
