web hosting idea

Server and disk space prices are so low, I can easily beat the competition by charging $5 a month and running a DSL line and a server out of my house, specialize in low bandwidth sites, like families, clubs, charities, small business people.

I don't need salesmen either, cuz I'm gonna beat amway at their own game. I'll take the multi-level commissions through referrals idea, and throw out all the other crap that makes you sick to your stomach. I've already started working on sponsorships in a couple of local businesses; most would jump on the chance to sponsor something like this - www.qcmoney.com/love

Plus I can do all kinds of great stuff easily with technology, like searchable message boards, etc. Give away information for free. I personally hate fuckers that run pyramid schemes by "selling" information that can easily be found on the Internet or your local library. (I did it for a while, just as R&D though, and it was premium information). Information should be free.

I'll stake my reputation on it, (MCSE Consultant) and people will jump on it.

Here are two examples.
www.ehostingbiz.com has improved their marketing material, and have good downline tools. Their technical support is terrible, and the server has crashed twice on me.
www.refhost.com does not have the marketing material and the downline tools, but does have very responsive tech support by email.

Am I nuts, or is this a good idea?

through your DSL line? You're joking right?

1. It's only a 512k-1.5Mbit upload stream...
2. I'm pretty sure running servers is against DSL providers' TOS
3. Uptime??? =)

Information should be free? You've got to be kidding me right? Hey, do you think all porn should be free too? A lot of time and effort goes into doing research, you think everyone should just give YOU that information and claim it as charity?

When I was younger, I was an information broker. The reason people paid for information they could find in a library or elsewhere for free? My time was worth money and they didn't have the time/inclination/ability to do the research.

As for hosting on a DSL? hahahaha, your ISP will shut you down quickly...there is a lot more to hosting than just tossing up a server and hooking up your favorite FTP daemon....and what happens if one of these "low bandwidth sites" becomes popular? Are you expecting to surf on this DSL? That'll drag down your clients and their sites won't load very fast (not that they will on a DSL connection anyways). What type of security will you be using for this venture? Um, if you go multi-level, those people recruiting for you are, in fact, salesmen.

There is a lot more to hosting than just cheap prices...ask one of our clients, the guys over at http://www.thesmarks.com about their nightmares with cheap hosting ;)

okay, what if the bandwidth was overseas, where it was cheaper. Or wireless? Why not have several access points?

I setup servers for a living, I know the value of information. I just wanted to see who would bite ;>

Aloha

I would follow a franchising model. Low start up costs. Ethical treatment. Did you read my ad copy?

I didn't say I hated people who sell information. I said that I hated people who tell you they will make you rich selling information. It's an ingenious, if unethical pyramid scheme.

It can be done. Lot's of people host on their DSL lines and cable modems without any problems. However, I would not recommend doing this as a "hosting company" trying to host multiple sites for other people... you will fail miserably. If you just wanna host some of your own domains and sites, go for it. If your connection is good, and your system is fast, you won't really see too much of any slowdown as far as surfing or anything, but do it right and make sure you set up secondary DNS for yourself, and put a damn good backup system in place or when your system crashes... so do all your sites.

Actually, I've setup several company servers on DSL. Again, my target is low bandwidth users, like families, small business owners. I am upfront with people. I tell them don't expect to run a high bandwidth site for $5 a month.

Damn, must have been that "A" word to get you guys this excited...

If you're not pushing porn bandwidth through it, hell.... go for it. No reason not to. I know quite a few people that are doing this very thing. But they make it clear prior to signup... absolutely NO porn.

Running a hosting company and doing it right is not as easy as most people think. Anyone can do it but not many can do it right

Well, actually, it's not as hard as most people think either. It's alot of work initially, but once you got your system in place... it's a cakewalk.

I can put together a W2K server for hosting no problem. I know windows has security holes you can drive a truck through, but hopefully NIMDA et al. will make them wake up and realize that they will lose business if they don't get that shit fixed ASAP.
