I've noticed when I go out in public with my boyfriend to a store like Bestbuy or anywhere actually, sometimes the salespeople (men) will pay more attention to my guy and thus indirectly give him more respect (even though they might not realize it) instead of me. This really pisses me off, because first of all, my boyfriend has no money whatsoever, I am the one who is there to purchase items for myself, with MY money, so I feel as if I deserve respect and the service. Not him. I feel like people in general just assume that he is the one that is buying the stuff and that I am just tagging along or something.

Maybe I am power hungry or something, but stuff like this really pisses me off, to the point where I have to make a thread on gfy about it. If I pay for something I deserve to be treated and serviced well. My boyfriend's theory is that they don't want to talk to me or look at me, because if they do, they think that he will get mad, because I am with him. But to me, it is just a matter of respect. To me, it has to be exactly 50/50.

It's just extremely rude. For example, they will ask if we need help and then just make eye contact with my bf but not me. And then start talking to him about the shit they are selling. Fuck, I am not invisible, I am standing right next to him. And if either of us are going to spend any money there it's going to be me. So fuck Best Buy!

I bet if I were to go to Internext, people there would just automatically assume that my boyfriend is the "webmaster" and that I am just his girl. Well, the fact is that I am the webmaster and I am TEACHING him internet stuff. He knows nothing about webmastering. Another reason why I would never even go at all, because I know something like this would happen and it would piss me off to no end.

Well, I just had a very bad day today, so I felt like posting this.

When I served I always looked at the woman and joked around with her, just out of respect for her...that may be sort of the same thing.

Yeah, that's what my boyfriend means. He claims the guys talk to him in order to not disrespect him. But my bf has no money and no business to do!

Well, I'm over it already. My blood was just boiling for a second, but I just had something to eat so I feel calmer now. It's cool now.

Well I am glad its no biggie, Next time just ask your boyfriend to tell the sales man to talk to you and tell the sales man he is there for the ride. The sales man can then deal with you without the worry of disrepect...And he will not look bad.

Yes, we do this already. If someone asks if we need help I just talk for the both of us, I just say "We are fine, we are both just looking...." lol
I hate salespeople, I just order from the net, or do research on the net and then buy it, I don't need to go through any salespeople at all. Good thing is that my bf lets me be dominant, I like it like that.

Besides, already know the truth about that subject. I know that he's been with some in the past, but never when he is with me. The past is the past and it doesn't bother me anymore.

Good thread. Personally, I don't think it is about gender/sex as much as it is about perceptions of approachability. My wife has a very bubbly personality and is very very approachable. I, on the other hand, can be very quiet and matter of fact. In our case, customer reps/sales tend to give her the attention when we're out together buying something or browsing. It's no biggie. Sales/customer service people tend to focus on people they think they can work with better in terms of making the sale, etc. I don't let it bother me, in fact, I welcome it. She filters the info for me

Two reasons:

1) They don't want to disrespect your boyfriend

2) We (by 'we' I mean men and women) tend to assume that men are the heads of the relationship/household and make the ultimate decisions, so they will focus attention on the male. It's not fair, but that's the way it is. Each gender is not treated equal by both genders, at least not in 2004 and won't be in 2005.
