Taught My Son How To Shoot Today

First time shooting and he nailed the targets at the range perfectly. Guess it comes from playing video games so well.

Gave him a long lecture and lessons in all the aspects of gun safety first. Felt it was a good time to teach him respect for the power weapons have.

Do you think its a good thing to teach youngsters about guns and let them experience shooting one? I learned when I was 10 also and got my NRA jr. Pro-Marksman badge at summer camp when I was 11.

Taught him with a Walther P22.

my dad would always say:

'better that you do it infront of me, then with your friends behind my back'

he taught me shooting, had first alcohol with him, smoke, and a shit load of other stuff.... he always made sure we were prepared for entering a situation so we felt more comfortable and knew what to do...

My oldest son will join his pops for the first time this year for turkey hunting in Missouri! Out of all the hunting, it is my favorite - it's by far the most challenging. I know, those who don?t' hunt think wild turkey a challenging hunt, but they are.

One of the reasons why I felt the time was right. He goes over to friends houses and I know the parents all have weapons at home, so its important that kids are taught exactly what to do if a friend pulls out a parents weapon not knowing how dangerous it is.

I was amazed how quickly he picked up on everything. Loaded the clip perfectly. Set the safety. Only thing that went bad was a shell flew out and went down the inside of his safety glasses and the heat of the shell gave him a surprise stinger on his cheek.

You started shooting at 5. Whoa that's a bit early I think.

I taught one of my ex-girlfriends how to shoot and soon she was doing much better than me and I have been shooting all my life.

well, i think that's wrong. kids should be playing and having fun, not shooting for god's sake.

gun safety is an oxymoron.

Do you have kids yet? I'd venture to say every friends house he goes to play at has weapons there. I'd rather know that the kids understand and respect real guns than not. All it takes is one kid who doesn't know the difference and you'll have an incident.

I explained to him what to do immediately if any kid pulls out one of their parents guns.

Gun safety is one of the most important things to teach your kids in todays world which is so weaponized.

I guess, as a european, I just can't comprehend the fact that guns are around and not locked away.

Of course it's good that kids are aware about gun safety, but showing them how cool it is to shoot won't fix the problem in the long run. Guns kill people.

When he was only 6 he was playing at a friends house and the stupid parents let the kids alone in the garage and they had boxes of bullets lying around and the kids found and started playing with them. I freaked out on the father when my son told me about it. This is the shit you have to worry about as a parent. A lot of parents are clueless.

True guns kill. They also save lives.

Do they really? I agree that they're an 'equalizer', because people don't need physical strength to kill others anymore.

Saving lives seems a bit far fetched.

Educating kids on gun saftey is good. Teaching them how to shoot a gun is a different matter.

Of all the things to teach a growing child, I think how to shoot a gun would be one of the last things I pick.

Do you know how young some of the kids were that fought in the revolutionary war that founded this country?

Right now in fact about 30% of the countries in the world are recruiting children into their military forces. Some countries are even training children under 10 years old how to use AK-47's.

I started AaronM out with a 22 rifle when he was about 5 or 6. We had to put out a chair for him to stand behind to lay the rifle on and he didnt even have to bend over to sight down the barrel!

I can't stand weapons, particularly hand guns and automatics. When the right to bear arms was put into the Constituition, it had a completely different meaning in society than it does in this day and age. I think the entire gun industry should be shut down and every weapon destroyed. Let's go back to the glory days of knife fights. ;-)

I have a question for your non-US guys. When crime takes place in your country, do the bad guys still have guns?

I've been to other countries, just never been robbed, so this is a serious question I just can't imagine giving my wallet to someone holding anything but a gun or a large knife.

Sorry, couldn't edit.

Last time I was in London the headline on the newspaper said "50 Quid, the price of a gun in London".

I didn't read the story, but if the crooks can really get guns easily then why are you so disturbed by the idea of normal people having them?

(yes, I own guns )

I grew up in Wyoming and pretty much everyone is a hunter, so it was pretty common for kids to start shooting at 8 or 9. We were basically taught gun safety from about the time we could walk.

I started shooting (more than a BB gun) at 8. My dad had a 3/4 size .22 and that was my first gun. By 13, I was shooting in adult NRA tourneys.

In high school, I was in ROTC and made varsity rifle team and did quite well. I was always better shooting trap than small bore though.

actually, 99% of gun owners are responsbile and keep their guns under lock and key...the problem is the 1%, because those are the idiots we read about.

I grew up in a hunting community where gun safety was taught at a young age and any time there was ever news of a hunting accident, it was usually a newbie hunter from out of state who acted irresponsibly.

We also had zero violent crime...and keep in mind this was a community of red necks with liquor stores that had drive through windows....bottom line is no one was going to rob a store or break into a house knowing the owner had a gun and knew how to use it.

thats a H&K USP with a laser light module fitted, the silencer is like that because that exact look of the gun is in Metal Gear Solid the game series, its identical to the one in the game.
