61" HDTV as a computer screen - GoFuckYourself.com

Ok, I don't really know fuck all about HDTV, but I was wondering if it could be used as a computer monitor? I'm remodeling my basement and putting my office down there and I kinda thought it would be really cool to have a 61' monitar for a computer screen in the office instead if my little 21 incher????? Can this be done as the HDTV's are really comming down in price now (about $3k)...

I would say 21" is enough.

Not sure if you can connect that TV to the computer.

If it will work i'm not sure if it'll be real sharp.
Might be hdtv but it's still low resolution compared to a monitor.

Yes, depending on the connections your HDTV set has. You'll probably have to buy some additional hardware to get the signal from the VGA output to the TV's HDTV inputs.

Check out what connectors are on the back of your set.

I've got both my computers hooked into rear projection televisions, one 50 inch Toshiba (just via svideo) and a 53 inch Sony HDTV.

You have to be careful of burn-in though. You don't want your expensive HDTV set to have your Windows taskbar permanently burned into the tubes. Keep your contrast and brightness way down low. (calibrating your set with the Video Essentials DVD is a good idea.)

By the way, keep your monitor. It is impossible to get any work done sitting back 7 or 8 feet from the screen. It just doesn't feel right. It's great for games and movies and surfing the web though.

While I don't know about HDTV... there are 31in TVs that can be used as a monitor.

looking at a 61" inch monitor would most likely hurt your eyes, give you head aches, and make you want to switch back to smaller size...

Alot of the newer graphic accelorator cards are coming out with rca connections just for that purpose...IE. VooDoo5 I believe has them..

Sony Wega has SVideo and if your gfx card has SVideo out you can connect
to the Wega. The picture is "sharper" than a gfx card that has only a
composite video (RCA jack) but, monitors still rule.

It's fine (TV) for looking @ DVDs and DivX etc. but for long hours of
mouse work, and smaller font reading, it'll drive you batty.

Tip;
Get a second tower to run DVDs to TV then you'll still be able to
use your comp while the movies are running. Data switching
between the monitor and the TV is always possible but I find
degraded resolution on the monitor when using data switches.

RCA output has been around for ages. I have one comp that is
three years old and I built that one w/ a TNT2 vid/out.

Just to clarify, if you've got a HDTV set, you don't want to use the composite (rca) or the svideo connection. You want something that can pass along the progressive scan signal in it's full HDTV resolution, like this:

Yah listen to the others on their advice.

I tried the same thing and for business purposes it is not good. Hurts your eyes so much and is not sharp at all.

That plasma thing looks VERY interesting.... I think I'll wait till I go to Vegas.. I'm sure there they will have many people with various displays and I'll check out which one seems best... The cost of the plasma seemed very reasonable for what it says it can do.....thank you

I don't think the Sanyo is a HDTV projector. I only use the Sony for watching movies
