I Just Started My Art Collection Today, Anyone Else Collect Art?

I finally took the dive into the art world today

I picked up 2 beautiful pieces of work done by a Canadian Painter/Master Photographer (Alan Tomlinson). I went to up to a family friend's art gallery today and met with Alan who discussed at length with me his work.

Alan's niche is outdoor wilderness photgraphy and painting of Canada, and let me tell you it's quite spectacular. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of his work but as soon as we get our new pieces sent to us I will certainly take some pics.

Anyone else a collector or a collector in the making (like me)?

Art wise I really only like paintings of scenic things. Abstract stuff kills me, I have no interest in it at all. I've found that with abstract art you need to know way too much about the artist and the events surrounding the time period the piece was created in. Not for me. I just want to look and say "wow, very pretty".

I collect art by local artists. I like to pay them what their art is worth, which is usually more than they're asking. They seem to like me. LOL

Hmmm, "How much is this painting?"
"$300.00 Mr. Phillips."
"Wow, it is worth more than that. I want it and I'll pay $500.00"
"Why thanks Mr. Phillips."

It does kinda go like that. I tell them, "Man, don't under price your work. I realize there aren't that many people here in Chico that can afford to pay what your art is worth but I'm a photographer so I understand. I'll give you $____".

I have an original signed Salvador Dali that was passed down to me from my grandfather who was an avid art collector. I also have a Man Ray and Michael Parkes originals.

The Dali is the jewel in my crown though.

I tried to buy the painting in these pics but the owner wouldn't sell. A local high school kid painted it and I love it.

Yeah we have a few nice pieces of art.. We have a MIchael Dumas painting, and I have a few antique paintings of Ancient Egypt by a 19th century italian painter by the name of Emile Marchetini. They are amazing watercolors painted in the 1890's.

I have fallen in love with an Italian painter. All his paintings are scenery/scenes from an old Italian village. They are absolutely stunning, definitely my style.
They don't really fit in my place right now, but I'll make them fit in my next place

I have been dabbling with local art mostly. My taste is unusual so it takes me a long time to find a painting I like.

I have recently aquired two paintings from Morris Katz that I just sent out for custom framing. I can't wait to get them back.

I collect Howard Finster and other folk art:

Since I live in a log cabin, "fine art" doesn't exactly fit. My son used to say my stuff looked like a 3 year old made it. He was right ;)

Exactly.

That photo was actually taken inside the studio that I tried buying the painting from, not inside a high school.

We picked up a 500bc vase a few weeks ago.

We're also heading up to New York in a few weeks to try and snag a couple of peices they have going under the hammer at Christies towards the start of May.

Good for you!

If you've the chance to meet with the artist themselves it's always a good deal.

I can't put things out for sale. They're bought up before I start. I started very young, bypassed the bs of galleries and went straight from artpad to private collections. I studied alot though in jr. high and high school. Started working professionally globally by 18 years old.

Saw how greedy people can be with art and wasn't prepared.

One thing I can tell you though is you can never, ever go wrong with good artwork purchases and presevation. Especially today it's a freakin' goldmine because with the internet you can reach millons of people and command whatever price you choose.

Collections go fast though. It's fucking scary how fast shit gets bought up nowadays.

I like certain sculptures. I bought several last week. Got em' for low when others were selling at triple. I lucked out. Only have one more I want and am pestering one company to issue a special issue.

Buying art and creating art, if you'e good and know wtf you're doing is better than real estate.
