IP vs. IP'less - GoFuckYourself.com

Can someone tell me what the benefits are to having a site/domain w/ an IP vs. one that is IP'less?

I have several of both and was wondering if I'm missing something w/ having one over the other...

The benefits of having an IP per domain is
for anon FTP, or SSL, used to be for getting
listed on some search engines, but I dont
think that it is an issue anymore.

So unless you need anon FTP or SSL there isnt much benefit from a dedicated IP...

if you are doing TGPs you might consider sites that track your submitter IP address. If you've got someone else on the same IP submitting, it may get you blacklisted.

I was blacklisted on 2 high traffic sites for "cheating" although I've never cheated and kept submitting the same gallery template from day 1, and I'd been listed for months.

The TGP owners never would tell me how I "cheated". I did some digging and found out that my unique IP was actually a shared IP, although I still don't know if this is what got me blacklisted or not. Anyone else have this happen?

P.S. I'm not going to bitch about my host misleading me because this is the best goddam host I've had (holy shit I've been thru a bunch of them too)! Speed and 100% uptime was worth more to me than losing 2 TGPs.

The only real difference is for SSL. Anon FTP really can be done on the same IP now, and if not the IP for your website is of no concern. (if a customer of mine wanted anon FTP, I'd simply use an IP for that, not for some odd reason use the same IP for both his site and the FTP site)

Anyways, hosts that provide an IP per domain are digging themselves a hole, and they will not be able to continue that practice for much longer. ARIN about a year ago now, probably more changed their guidelines and expressly said that IP's for virtual domains on the same machine are no longer a valid "use" of IP's and they will not delegate more because you run out because of that.

So, view providers that give you an IP per domain as those providers that say "unlimited" bandwidth. Eventually, the shit will hit the fan and you'll be SoL.

Right now, I'm sure some providers are making bank on an unsustainable business practice, but man.. It's not something I can do in good faith to my customers.

Alright...thanks for the feedback. All my sites are currently all virtual, supposedly some as IPs and others IP'less. I'm going dedicated this week and was just wondering when making that transfer how I should go about when requesting my IPs. Now I know.
