Guitar Hero video game gets axed

I remember when everyone and his dog was on this bad boy.

Activision Blizzard Inc., which also produces the "Call of Duty" series, is ending the "Guitar Hero" franchise after a run of more than five years. The move follows Viacom Inc.'s decision in November to sell its money-losing unit behind the "Rock Band" video games. Harmonix was sold to an investment firm for an undisclosed sum. Harmonix, incidentally, was behind the first "Guitar Hero" game.
Well, look on the bright side.... the whole Guitar Hero craze turned on a lot of kids to guitar playing. This little guy might not have learned the guitar from GH but he sure shreds:

Good riddance. The worst thing I ever seen was a rock band contest in the Windsor Casino put on by a Detroit radio station (WRIF). They had a full band up there with their plastic instruments doing a Journey song, just tapping and pushing their little plastic buttons.

Was almost surreal. I was actually ashamed for them.

I found it odd that they were going to kill this line. But then again, the have COD, and their recent launch Black Ops was the most popular game launch ever.

It's one of those things that you can't really build off of and get people to buy new versions. It's like if cell phones never had any new features, just new ring tones, it would be really hard to sell new phones every few months. Same with Guitar Hero, you can only really offer new songs which isn't enough to get people excited about spending money.

I just heard that COD is going to have a new on-line platform which sounds like they are going to charge for playing.

Exactly. It's not the quality of the product but the business model. It's a one off type of model. There's no scalable add ons or logical avenues for new versions unlike awesome games in the pipeline like

Battlefield 3 http://www.gamebandits.com/blog/2011...ails-revealed/

or

Dirt 3
