The baggage handlers were shifting the drugs INTERSTATE. ie, from some queensland grower to the sydney market. The domestic flights have little or no restrictions unlike flying out of the country.. if you've got someone on the inside you can move it around very easily.. if baggage handlers HAVE JUST BEEN CHARGED WITH RUNNING DRUGS IN THE LAST MONTH doesn't that say something? I've heard interviews with a baggage handler talking about people using it to ship it around.

The problem is that the baggage handler supposed to intercept it at Sydney fucked up and left it in the boogie board case where it went to Bali.

Moving pot interstate is a big thing.. Adelaide and Queensland > Sydney where people buy shit per GRAM. lol

You don't know shit.

"A ROGUE baggage handler who intercepted drug mules' bags before Customs could inspect them enabled a Sydney cocaine syndicate to smuggle more than $10million worth of the drug, police claim.

Investigations are believed to centre on a group of six baggage handlers at Sydney airport.
News of the probe came after the arrest of 11 men on Monday when police wound up a multi-million-dollar cocaine-importing syndicate in Sydney after a five-month investigation. "

yeah no doubt baggage handlers do move some drugs around like that, though I reckon it's easier to truck it interstate, there's no risk

it only makes sense to import / export drugs via airports because you can get it through security

Few people with officially 'boycott' them. But you can sure as hell bet that not many Australians (in comparison to beforehand) want to go there anymore. I know heaps of people who used to go there, none of them want to go back anymore.

They reckon Fiji tourism has spiked in the past few months. I've been to Fiji and Vanuatu but never Bali. Not for any particular reason, just I don't think many people make a big distinction between the various tropical islands - I know I didn't. And since then we've had Indonesian's massacre of East Timorese, terrorist attacks and a very shoddy public trial whatever the real facts are.

I mean sure the majority of resistance will fade away, tourist operators will start selling Bali again... but there will still be an ongoing drop... plus a lot of people saying it aren't boycotting.. they're just scared of having the same thing happen.

Spoton!

Also, how the fuck does a person get a whole body board bag full of pot into an Australian international airport, past the customs and past the sniffer dogs and onto an international flight in the first place... I've been traveling in and out of Aus plenty of times and know for a fact that such a task would be impossible to do.

There are A LOT of Australians who feel very disgusted by this innocent girl going to prison. People will remember for a couple of years at least and travel will drop for awhile. But people will forget and travel go back up. And of course large amount of people will not care and go anyways but I believe there will be a drop thats for sure.

You type in corby into google and they are buying PPC for boycotbali .com or something. (I like it they don't deserve our money).

Is 20 years really that much more than you would get in the U.S. for having 9 pounds?

You can get life in the U.S. if you get busted three times.

How many of these anti-Indonesia people are outraged by the fucked up U.S. laws?

Many right wingers want life in jail for pot smokers in America - why are they complaining when it happens in other parts of the world?

20 years is a fair sentence in indonesia...

I remember a French guy called Michael Blanc, found guilty for the same drug problem, he was sentenced to life... Only for 4Kg of pot !!!

Fuck indonesia !

The fact is the case has been very weak from day 1, and it has been very obvious (from the various interviews, etc) the Judge never really had any other verdict in his mind. If the case had been in Australia she would of almost certainly got off, and whilst people have to realise different nations have different laws, you can't blame people for not being happy when someone is convicted (by their standards) on a very weak case, and is given such a lengthy sentence.

I know she is someones sister, dauhgter, freind, but at the end of the day, everyone should respect Indonesia's laws on drugs, i only wish we had the same laws here in Australia, She is guilty, everyone knows that pot in Bali is shit and Australia has better quality pot (I dont touch the stuff but it is a know fact) she would have been taking it over there for her sister and why was her brother not present during the trial the brother that was flying there with her, most likley the pot was his and her other Brother is in Jail over here in Australia.

Do the Crime do the Time.........

Yes US laws are just as fucked up, US gives out 10-20+ year anal raping sentences like candy. US jails are so inhuman they should all be sued and cleaned up IMO.

You get put in jail in US for 1-5 years, anal raped white boy and traded around by your black pimp daddy for packs of cigerettes. You get aids and you have no protection in jail. You get out you've got a death sentence with aids and you can't sue the jail cause "as a prisoner you have NO RIGHTS"

That is disgusting as well. US isn't that much better than Indonesia in many ways re: anal rape no protection for prisoners. Countries without such bad drug problems give our (fair) sentences, you get caught with 9 pounds of marajuana and you get 5 years in jail, get caught with 1 pound get 1 year and probation. Thats how it should be but US and these other countries have so much drug problems they have to just put these people away for large sentences to get them off the street cause there is so many of them. Which I can understand to some degree but I do feel strongly that if your forced to be put in jail and have someone take control of your saftely that those people should be responsible for providing protection for you or face big penalties.

Seems to be two issues going on here..

1) Is she guilty or not
2) Is 20 years fair / reasonable / appropriate

everyone can have a guess at 1), but for 2), it's a matter for each country to decide themselves....other countries can't export their values or beliefs.. there are lots of countries with 'unreasonable' policies and laws, but what gives one the right to judge another?

screwed up...a large political message frm australia..like recalling your ambassador and shitting down relief funds is the only recourse.

Who the hell do these people think they are? We are going to hold a hot aussie girl in jail and not let any witnesses come forth to speak for her...yeah right...that judge needs to be be dropped off about 200 kilometers out to sea....give him some alone time to think and a chance to swim back to shore

apparently John Howard doesn't agree...

'I think the entire nation feels for this girl,' John Howard, the Prime Minister, said. 'But we have to accept the justice system of other countries. I ask that we all pause and understand the situation and recognise and respect that when we visit other countries we are subject to the laws and rules of those countries.'

I'll bet you any money that if she was a dumpy, ugly aboriginal girl with a moustach.... the only reaction from Aussies would have been...

"Stupid Abo!"

...and that would have been it.

The Indonesian government is FULL OF SHIT. Typical Third World hypocrisy. They SELECTIVELY punish small time smugglers but 'connected' big time smugglers are given a free pass. Need proof? Just check out the number of heroin addicts in Indonesia... it keeps growing and the price of smack keeps dropping.

Typical bullshit. It isn't much better here in the Philippines. If you're a foreigner or you are 'unconnected' you are seen as a cash cow and are supposed to know ALL the laws and regulations on the books. Or else, you either pay up or off to tuberculosis/skin boils-infested prison you go. Even if you pay up, you have to KEEP ON paying cuz everyone up and down the line will hit you up cuz you're running an illegal business. This is common knowledge given the recent JUETENG (illegal gambling) scandal.

I see more of that same bullshit happening here once the Revilla "anti porn" legislation passes and public hysteria builds to a boiling point.

3rd World "Justice" sucks ass--there is no such thing as "equality before the law".

Of course the truth is only known by the person or persons involved, but find it reaally hard to believe that someone would be dumb enough to smuggle 9 pounds and I think most people have enough commen sense to know how tough penalties are in smaller countries. If it was a pound or two I would give it 50/50. But again, people do dumb shit.

It really pisses me off that in the US we can basically tell the UN that we are going to wage war on a country whether they like it or not and on top of that shift the reasons from WOMD to liberating an oppressed nation cause we cant find any WOMD, but we always play the "we have to be diplomatic card" when dealing with these type of issues. Go look at a map. We had to wipe out Iraq so we can go crush the 2nd of the 3 axis of evil Iran. There's already an increase of news lately about how Iran supports terrorism. My point is, that if there is a substantial reasonable doubt about whether this person is guilty or even if this person did not receive a chance to prove their innocence (and I dont care what another countries policy is) the country of origin should do something about it. As a US citizen I am required to adhere to US law even when out of country, so I should be afforded the same liberties as penalties. I would never wish any harm to anyone living abroad, but what would Indonesia do if we threatened military action. NOTHING! The rest of the world is already pissed off at us, so I say if you can push one 3rd world country around, why not another. Australia supported us in Iraq, so lets repay the favor.
Would someone please call the White House and tell them to add Indonesia to to list. Now that Iraq is gone, we have room. Just tell them you have good inteligence that they are making nukes. Ah, on second thought tell em you have bad intelligence, it's been working so far..
