Is server fast enough? Help please.

1 Gigabyte \ SuperCeleronMarkII
1 Intel \ Celeron \ 2.4 Ghz
1 Transcend \ 512MB \ DDR266
1 Unknown \ Onboard \ IDE
1 Seagate \ 80GB:IDE:7200RPM Barracuda \ ST380011a

and I get 1000GB per month dedicated hosting on a 10mbps connection.

I am having problems handling listings at worldsex and the sort. High traffic means connection problems it seems. They told me it had 218mb of the ram as s___? I forget what they said.

Any thoughts on the why it is not handling the gallery listings? I have no scripts on the server just basically galleries and a few sites. Any suggestions on how to get it to handle the load of traffic a big tgp can send? Thanks.

swap ram, it has 218 swap ram, i think that is part of the 512 ram that comes with the server.

10mbps pipe is the most probable problem on a burst-traffic situation. The RAM is only a problem if you have more than about 128MB worth of popular galleries at one time.

Can you show me traffic graphs?

are you having anything on that box that uses scripts (and is heavy on your sql for example). Cause on my very simple and cheap p3 1ghz, 256mb, 40gb hard drive, i was able to handle thehun listings without a problem.

That server is able to push at least 15mbps worth of picture galleries IF configured correctly. Most probably your 10mbps pipe is satured. Try upgrading to 100mbps for $10 extra / month, you won't regret it.

Do you have any MRTG graphs we could look at to determine line saturation? Also, posting the output of top could be helpful. Without knowing what you're serving, and how that is processed, we can't make logical conclusions as to what the bottleneck is.

If you don't have them installed already, please install Cacti and phpsysinfo. These tools will make diagnostics much easier, and are great to have around for daily use.

Thanks for all the help. I added 512mb ram and just now put in an order to move to the 100mbps also.

The one problem that always bothers me is the fact that I have never seen a page down but what worldsex uses to check the pages keeps getting a reply that it cannot connect to page and I get knocked off every single time I get a page listed there. I have talked to Pierre at worldsex a few times and he has been kind and checked his logs and sees that it shows that there was a connection problem. Is there anyway that his program/bot and my server/ip/site are not meshing correctly somehow?

He mentioned that maybe my server could not handle the load, the people that manage my server suggest it might be low on ram so I guess all I can do is make these changes and then see what happens. I cannot imagine my server cab be blamed after these changes.

I have had other dedicated servers over the years and they were surely tons slower than this one and they never had problems with much more traffic. Very confusing to me. I looked at all the graphs and they really do not show a problem either. I saw one day where I maxed out right at 10mbps but besides that it stays pretty steady in the 4-7mbps when I am up and listed.

Either way, I am tired of losing sleep over this. I guess my only hope is to wait and see what happens when they get the changes made to the server.
