nah man, back in segregation that's how they determined if you were "black" & if u have to go do shit w/"the blacks"... if a certain % (i can't remember the exact number) of yer fam was black (or you were descended from them) then you were black even if u had bright skin.

Very true. In Japan, the BURAKUMIN look exactly like other Japanese but they are looked down upon and historically discriminated against. Same in South Korea, there's a province (I forgot the name) but anyone from there is deemed either a thief or a whore (depending on their gender). Crazy shit how people use geography or religion or even occupation (the basis for burakumin discrimination--they come from a line of grave diggers/butchers/people who work with the dead) to form the basis for fucked up discrimination.
