What would be the better cpu for a high traffic site with MySQL database?
2x Intel Xeon 5620 or 1x Intel i7-7700K OC - 4c/8t - 4.7GHz /5GHz

The 1x Intel i7-7700K OC - 4c/8t - 4.7GHz /5GHz2x is almost twice as fast as the Intel Xeon e5620 and it has 4 cores to split up the workload

Not sure I'd put a production site on a overclocked machine, but yeah the i7-7700K will most likely spit out results faster in similarly configured machines, the dual 5620 will have some help since it has 16 threads vs the 8 from the 7700, and it's cpu cache is 50% larger.
Sql queries are more about tweaking your application to make sure it's running at 100%, you can always add more memory since mysql will use more if given more. Also your drive that is holding the database can make a huge difference in how fast you get results. And most importantly make sure you really need to hit the database, a good caching solution can speed up a site 10x with no sql changes at all. ![]()

My current server: 2x Intel Xeon 5620 Memory: 32GB DDR3 RAM Drive 1: 240GB SSD 50TB Traffic per month CentOS 6.8 64-bit 1000Mbit Premium Network Trying to configure a new server that can handle more traffic, the database isn't built in the best way but there's no chance of rebuilding it atm so looking for a stronger server.

If your hittinig a point where 1 server might not be enough to handle the load, load balance 2 or more servers with cloudflare. That way you just add more servers to take care of your needs

That Xeon is 8 years old. Those i7 are desktop level chips. I wouldn't use either.
Judging specs just by specs is not going to get you the best solution. For best results, I recommend having a knowledgeable tech take a look at your set up and making a recommendation based on what you have going on. Tweaking is always possibility to make things run better for you as well. We'd be happy to do this for you as well if you like, just let me know. Shooting from the hip… I would not use either of those setups. Go with something like this: E3 32 GB of RAM, maybe 64 2 x SSD drives, 120 GB range would likely be fine for your needs

Also I would recommend upgrading as soon as you can. That operating system is on the old side and running one hard drive is always scary…
