With all the under the table type deals going on, you can bet they won't be 'up for grabs'

new.net is already selling them and icann will soon allow for them by the looks of at.. which means there will be doubles .. yes 2 adult.com's for example. One registered with new.net and one through an icann registry. New.net is trying apparently trying hard to make their domains be the official ones by having them added to icann.
I took this from the new.net site:

9. What will happen if ICANN releases a domain name extension that is identical to a New.net domain name?
We are working very hard to achieve universal resolvability of New.net domain names through a combination of ISP relationships and plug-in downloads. At the same time, we are reaching out to ICANN and its supporters to get them to understand the viability of our names and our approach and to get ICANN to add our names to the "root" servers that they operate. Should ICANN decide to introduce a domain name extension in conflict with one of our extensions and assign it to another registry, they will in fact introduce a "collision" in the name space, something they have professed wanting to avoid. If that were to happen, individual consumers and ISPs would have to choose between the ICANN version and the New.net version of the name. It is our intention to demonstrate a massive market acceptance of our names that will prevent such collisions from being introduced.

So it can go 2 ways... imagine having to choose???!!!

174,661,619 New.net enabled Internet users worldwide*

* New.net domain names are accessible by persons that use one of our partner ISPs to access the Internet or who activate their browsers. This number is limited now, but growing daily.

Uhhh thats a lot of surfers to lose!!!

I think that this is gonna be a total cluster fuck because some people that have had their domains for YEARS are gonna end up losing them because you just know there's gonna be a pile of assholes out there just picking up everything. Imagine getting thehun.xxx

I think that it should be set up where the .com owners get first dibs on the domains, but that'd be a fair way to do it which would never happen.

I should 100% be where the .com owners get first crack at their own respective .XXX domain.

ICANN will continue to release tld's at a slow but steady pace as that is what adds to their bottom line.
More adult and other tld's coming to a registrar near you.

Considering the obscene price point that .XXX is, someone should lobby to open a .adult(or equivalent) tld at decent prices.

.com will still be tops. Why should XXX.com become XXX.XXX? It is already self labeled.

No clue. But if they gave new.net the rights and made their .xxx domains legit it would set an unwanted precedent. You'd see these bullshit alternative top level domain registars popping up everywhere in hopes ICANN will some day make one of their extensions legit and give them the rights to sell it.

How many times is this going to be discussed, people? new.net is a scam with no legal standing. Its like I started my own private registry of .com (perfectly legal) and sold adult.com, sex.com, etc. to peops and then anyone using my plugin gets that instead.

All fun and legal, but all bullshit and worthless.

The registrars get the early picks...

"Registrars using their "lists" in landrush situations to serve their own interests rather than the public's":

Jason Hendeles is Founder/CEO of ATech Registrars
Jason Hendeles is Founder/CEO of ICM Registry Inc
Is this the guy who is in charge of getting xxx up?

its all speculation .. Icann makes that decision.
In the absence of a trademark issue - for the moment ICM registry has been acknowledged by Icann as the registry.
I have a feeling that will change, but again, its speculation

A lot of corruption in the registrars, but apparently "legal" and ICANN doesn't really care.
