Anyone using UMTS/3G?

The mobile phone company I'm using has finally launched their UMTS network (3G) in Norway. The company is launching NetCom Connect, which is a smartcard for PC laptops that provides internet access at broadband speed. Unlimited use is currently priced at $60/month so that sounds pretty good in my head.

How is that price compared to other countries?

3G here in Sweden is way overpriced. At least for me who only use it to call people, I don't really care about the other useless junk.

high-speed? Blah.
"UMTS supports up to 1920 kbit/s data transfer rates (and not 2 Mbit/s as frequently seen), although at the moment users in the real networks can expect performance up to 384 kbit/s"
- wikipedia.org

I'll wait for 4g around 2010 before I switch my gsm. 3G is a waste, too expensive too little and too late.

getting 3g this week, ive been waiting for a phone thats tri-band as well so I can use it in the US/europe with no problems. its 384kbps up and down, but in the UK there are no unlimited tariffs and its expensive as hell if you want to use it for transferring files.

Yeah. Up/down. You won't be downloading anything faster than that...and at crowded areas with loads of people connecting to the same base station you'll get even slower connections. 4G will most likely incorporate wi-fi to the connection where available. UMTS is REALLY a piece of shit. Might as well just use GRPS and not 'surf' than pay oneself sick and get sub-adsl speeds.

sure but 3g is a brand new data product, the ability to use broadband without a fixed line is pretty revolutionary - all the competition charge similar rates. they paid a HUGE amount for the license a few billion i think so need to get that paid off before they can start offering big discounts. the handsets also come free with most providers, and there is no real start up cost, so from that point of view it isnt so bad.

prices will fall with time, but there has been HUGE investment in infrastructure and the license , they would not be able to operate at a business if they charged prices for airwave data at similar rates as cabled data

well.. don't agree with you there a1ka1ine.. there is a limit to what people are willing to spend so they better start reducing their prices to get the masses to use them.. with the masses comes profit
