I think when people die...

...and we feel sad about it, we're probably mostly sad for ourselves.

It makes you realize we're all on this weird stretch of road together, and more or less all having the same trip. The death of someone you knew when you were a kid, makes you know you're no longer a kid, that YOU TOO* will die (we always "know", but feel it more), and makes you calculate (for having learned the math so well) that life is loss...

que en paz descanses, jaime

Death?

You mean we are all going to die?

Fuck...

That blows. I might have to change a few plans then.

Life is a highway...

Yes, in many ways grief is a selfish expression of fear through ignorance.

We are not usually concerned for the current well being or not of the one who has lost their body, but of how we are now to cope without them.

Also, as you said it reminds us of our own physical mortality here and that we must also face "the great unknown" one day. This is especially true looking at the Math once you reach the "hump" age 35-40 where your likely days left are less than those already spent. This combined with the fact that you will have known more people that have died, makes death seems more real.

Of course mourning is selfish. We always say "we will never see so and so again." We never say, "They'll never see me again." It's all about the pain we feel. Which is perfectly natural and part of being human. We're emotional, thinking creatures.

They are never in the way -- -- not even at funerals.
