Cheers to Phil Lynott!

Thin Lizzy was one hell of a rock and roll band. Jailbreak and Black Rose are killer albums.

DUBLIN (AFP) - Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott was being honoured as one of the fathers of Irish rock music with a statue in the heart of Dublin.

The life-size bronze statue of Lynott, who died aged 36 in 1986 after years of drug addiction, was to be unveiled by Lord Mayor Catherine Byrne near the corner of Harry Street and Grafton Street, the capital's top shopping area.

Thin Lizzy was formed by Lynott -- its main songwriter, lead singer and bassist -- in 1969 and broke into the charts with a rock version of a traditional Irish folk tune called "Whiskey in the Jar".

It went on to release a succession of albums and singles until its break-up in 1983 at the end of a world tour in Germany.

The group's most successful album was the 1976 "Jailbreak" with the anthemic track "The Boys Are Back in Town" reaching the Top 10 in Britian and Top 20 in the United States.

Last year, Thin Lizzy's 1978 "Live and Dangerous" album was voted the best live rock album by readers of the magazine Classic Rock.

The statue in Dublin was the result of cooperation between the city council and the Roisin Dubh trust, a charity set up in 1994 by Lynott's mother Philomena to commemorate his life and achievements.

Born in Britain's second city Birmingham to a black Brazilian father and a working-class Irish mother, Lynott was largely brought up by his grandmother in Dublin. Saturday would have been his 56th birthday.

one of the most talented musicians ....

Phil Lynott gained a reputation as one of rock and roll's bad boys, earning international success with Thin Lizzy during the 70's and early eighties. Lynott became one of the best-known bass guitar frontmen in rock with his Fender® Precision bass®, changing the image of the bassist from an immovable member of the rhythm section to an all-guns-blazing showman.

Philip Lynott was born in Birmingham, England on August 20, 1949. In his early teens, Philip joined a local band called the Black Eagles as their vocalist playing for some of the most fashionable Irish "showbands" in huge ballrooms up and down the country. By the age of 18, Lynott formed Skid Row with Belfast guitarist Gary Moore. After a brief stint with a band called Orphanage Thin Lizzy were formed in 1970. The line-up was Eric Bell (guitar), Brian Downey (drums), Philip Lynott (bass and vocals), and Eric Wrixon (keyboards).

Thin Lizzy's first single The Farmer reputedly sold 283 copies! After the departure of Wrixon, their debut album Thin Lizzy was released in April of 1971, followed by Shades of a Blue Orphanage in March 1972.

Following the release of their third album, Vagabonds of the Western World in September 1973, Eric Bell left the band and was replaced by Gary Moore for the remainder of their Irish tour.

Thin Lizzy was then joined by two new guitarists, 17-year old Brian "Robbo" Robertson of Glasgow, and a Californian named William Scott Gorham. The band's deal with Decca had run out, and they signed on with Phonogram. Their fourth album, Night Life , was released in November 1974.

In March of 1975, Thin Lizzy visited the United States for the first time, touring with Bob Seger and Bachman-Turner Overdrive. It was here that they learnt a new level of professionalism and really tightened up as a band. Spurred on by their U.S trip, they released the album Fighting in September of 1975, and ended the year on a high note, turning in a great performance at the Great British Music Festival at Olympia on December 31st.

1976 brought the breakthrough album Jailbreak , which included their top 10 single The Boys Are Back In Town. The single was released in April of 1976, and reached number eight on the British charts. It reached the Top Twenty in the States as well, and the album notched up sales of 100,000, far in excess of anything the band had achieved previously.

Just seven months after Jailbreak , in October 1976, the band released another album, this one called Johnny the Fox . It was an ideal follow-up to Jailbreak , and confirmation that Thin Lizzy was on the crest of a wave. The album went to number twelve on the UK charts.

In 1977, the band set off for the States again with Gary Moore recruited once more, this time as a replacement to Robbo.

In September, their next album Bad Reputation was released, and quickly rose to number four on the UK charts. This was followed by their double live album Live and Dangerous (1978), which was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic. The album is most remembered for Lynott's live rendition of Still in Love With You.

1979 saw the release of Black Rose and the departure of Gary Moore following tension in the band.

In 1980, Lynott got married, and amidst further line-up changes, he released his first solo album, Solo in Soho , followed up by another Thin Lizzy album ? Chinatown ? in October. This album spawned the hit single Killer On The Loose.

1981's compilation album The Adventures of Thin Lizzy , which went gold in the UK and paved the way for their eleventh studio album Renegade , an overlooked classic.

Philip's second solo album, The Philip Lynott Album was released in October of 1982 to poor reviews. It was clear, at this stage that the excesses of the rock star life were beginning to have a detrimental effect on Lynott's artistic output, a fact confirmed by the departure of Thin Lizzy manager Chris O'Donnell, who had been central to the band since 1973.

In true rock and roll style, the band embarked upon a huge world tour, the "Thunder and Lightning Tour?, which was billed as their last. The tour and the studio album of the same name ( Thunder and Lightning , 1983) were a great success. A live album, Life , was released at the end of the year. The band's last show was on September 4, 1983, in Nuremburg, Germany.

The remainder of Phil Lynott's life was blighted by drug use and physical deterioration. In 1984, Lynott formed a band called Grand Slam, which met with a small degree of success.

In 1985 Lynott worked with Gary Moore on Moore's song, Out in the Fields . When this was released, it was backed by Lynott's Military Man , which he had written for Grand Slam. The record reached #5 on the UK charts in May. Nineteen , another Grand Slam song, was released in November, and Philip was beginning work on another album.

On Christmas Day, 1985, Philip Lynott was found unconscious in his London house. He was taken to Salisbury Hospital, where he died on January 4th, 1986. The pathologist's report indicated that he had developed multiple internal abscesses and blood poisoning, as a result of which he had suffered kidney, liver, and heart failure.

On January 9th a service was held for Lynott at St. Elizabeth's Church in Richmond, and on January 11th he was buried from the Howth Parish Church in Ireland. The Gaelic inscription on his stone reads, " Go dtuga Dia suaimhneas da anam " - "May God give peace to his soul".
