MBA or master in economics?

What's the more useful one?

Hmmm... I'd say it depends on what you want to go into.

International non-governmental and semi-governmental organizations, particularly in the fields of economic and social studies and policy. Since good positions in such a field require extensive experience, both a masters in economics and an MBA could be a good basis for a career leading to the ultimate goal, although both would take rather different paths (economics would likely lead to the research/government path, while an MBA would lead to the private/corporate path, but both can eventually lead to the same kind of work).

What I'm mostly curious about is the usefulness of the content of the studies, i.e. which one is more likely to deliver knowledge that isn't as easily gained through self-study, experience and smaller courses.

it also depends on where the courses are offered and what type of program they have...a program with more experienced faculty and hands-on experience would be more rewarding than an online MBA, right?

What's a master in economics go for? You need a PHD in economic to get a decent job in this field. IMO, you are better off with a MBA.

You're right about that, ofcourse.

However, whichever I choose, I will take a number of years to study full time at the best program I can find, get into and afford (in a country with a language I understand), so either should be of good quality. Online education isn't really my thing.

But a master in economics is an important step towards a PhD in economics

The decision, to me, seems to be mostly one between knowledge and theory on one side, and the real world and experience on the other. Not entirely sure which one I prefer yet.

Actually, it isn't so much about making money as much money as possible as it is about having an interesting, international career and doing work that's right in the middle of things and influences the world.

Porn is a good way to make money, but it's limited in its scope and the lifestyle, in the end, isn't one I see myself spending the rest of my life on.

Wow you must be missing the link. Need to phone a friend? Yeah and someone with any college degree will usually make more then a janitor. Your point is? What I am trying to say is having just an MBA doesn't really put you in the green where having something else to back it up for whatever industry your going in will really make you shine. Years back an MBA would usually make you look like a winner for alot of corporate jobs out there.

Who says I was talking about just an MBA? MBA or master's in economics + additional master's degree in philosophy + fluency in a handful of languages is what I'm aiming for.

MBA-level knowledge can be achieved on your own, albeit admittedly harder than by going to school. Also a lot easier putting it into practice. Good luck achieving the same level of knowledge in economics on your own and especially putting it into practice.

Hey I wouldn't say its a mistake. Philosophy can be real handy in the business world. I think your best bet would be to compare the course difference between a masters in econ and a MBA and then look at what those courses would offer you between the two.

I wondered where you were, my fine liberal hippie friend. I guess you've been studying and smoking copious amounts of pot.

All ribbing aside and to be honest, I have my MBA from USF and it has pretty much NEVER been brought up at any interview. Out of all of the jobs that I've ever applied for my educational record has only been pulled once.

I've yet to see someone with a Masters in Economics be anything other than a professor or number cruncher slash coffee-getter in some government office. I have seen a lot of successful MBA's.

P.S. Welcome back. I missed you, my hemp sweater and birkensock wearing friend.

If you truely want to do International Business why not go with an International Business degree. I know at my Univ. its one of the damn hardest programs to get into.

Sounds well thought out. Ask 5 people who have your dream job about the best path to it. This works really well.

Well, philosophy is fun, and some of the techniques are quite useful, but ultimately it does me little good to know that there actually was a fair amount of sceptic theory incorporated in late scholastic debates or that physical objects and processes can be said to have their own built-in normativity. Philosophy is a great hobby, but perhaps best left a hobby.

i seriously doubt you can get professor position with just a master in economics. What you'll probably get is a lecturer or an assistant position. I don't even know if you can call yourself an economist without a PhD!

Of course you can. I can call myself an economist, doesn't have to be true though. But I CAN.

You typically get an assistant or junior lecturer position while working on your PhD, at least over here.

Watch a little daytime T.V. and you'll find PLENTY of places where a Masters in Econoics can be a professor.
