The future of magazines....

Hey gang, what do you think is the future for magazines? With the internet being what it is today....and what it may be in the future, do you still think magazines will have their place? Personally, I think the magazine industry as a whole has taken a beating because of the internet and would not be surprised if this continues well into the future.

I have subscriptions to a few websites that I used to have subscriptions to their magazines - but spending a month looking at & reading the same magazine is boring as hell...especially when the website is updated a few times a week - thoughts?

Wireless routers, a PowerBook G4, and a close hamper as my desk... these things have taken the place of my magazine reading in the bathroom.

i think it depends on the person some people really like having the mag reading it while drinking coffee or shitting you know and some people like reading off the internet while doing many different things at the same time..

in the end i think only the best mag will stay

What does that have to do with America? Do you think they don't have magazines and toilets in other countries?

He said it was an American tradition. And it is. He did not say it was EXCLUSIVELY American.

if a magazine wants to stay in biz then they have to have a web presence.
most of those that didn't are gone.

If it's not exclusively American, then it's not much of an American tradition, is it? It's just something humans do.

It's like saying that drinking water is an American tradition or walking down the street is an American tradition or looking at rainbows is an American tradition.

Hot dogs and baseball are American traditions.

It's as American as Apple Pie.

Lots of countrys have traditions. Here, let me help you. Here are two definitions of the world "tradition":

1. an inherited pattern of thought or action
2. custom: a specific practice of long standing

That does NOT say that only one country can do something for it to be a "tradition" now does it?

You realize that means basically everything American's do could be called an American tradition?

There's a difference between something simply being a tradition, and something being a national tradition. IMO, for something to be a national tradition, it should probably have something to do with that country, reading a magazine on the shitter might be a tradition, but it isn't a national tradition.

I've been a magazine writer for years and I can tell you that magazines are going the way of the 8-Track tape! It's not just the internet, it's 400 channels on TV, news on your cell phone, PDA's that download the sport scores - we're a mobile culture and magazines don't fit in.

I hate to see them go - but I do love my ebook reader - I carry thirty books and when I'm done - just delete! No waste, no trees killed.

I read and buy magazines just for those facts.

Now if it is a dieing medium, then why oh why would an internet message board/news source put out a magazine? Hell not even a normal sized one but one so fucking big it will not fit in any current magazine holders on the market.

Don't know about other people but.....

There is nothing more comforting than being able to flip through pages; the tactile experience of my fingers touching paper and reading of soft, easy text brought to my eyes by the reflection of light.

There's something about reading on a computer screen, for me, that is more of "work" than enjoyment. I do it because it's available however. But when I'm relaxing, cheeks a-flexin', I want to chill with a nice magazine / book in my hand than a laptop pissing photons at me.

I've noticed that I prefer to read magazines while sitting in front of my computer because I'll read about a business that interests me and I'll want to check out their website right away. I'll read a book review that interests me and I'll go to Amazon.com to buy it. I'll read about a new movie coming out that sounds good and I'll go check out the preview online.

Whenever I read a magazine, it will make me want to check out all this stuff online. So it should probably just read it online in the first place.

You guys really jump to conclusions about people being offended. Am I not allowed to reply to someone's post without being accused of being upset?

Maybe I need to use more emoticons?
