The 8700 here is carried by Rogers only. I use Bell, their new BB is the 7130. I love it so far, fast download speeds and the key pad was easy to learn.

I can vouch for verichat, no problems at all for me. It can run in the background too.

Sometimes you need adjust some settings to use some apllications.
In Settings/TCP... there is a an APN value

That settting is carrier specific . In the case of tmobile, I set it to wap.voicestream.com

What is your carrier?

I have Bell Mobilty. I cant seem to find Settings/TCP, all I have is Options and a full list of things in there, but to TCP.

BTW, I just connected the BB to my LapTop and used it as a modem, it worked just fine.

thx,
Ray

we must have posted within a few seconds of each other. Sadly for Bell Mobility:

.
"Bell Mobility - Does NOT Work; Need MDS hosting
Unfortunately, none of the Bell Mobility BlackBerries have a TCP/IP stack enabled. Not even the 7250. A future BlackBerryOS may fix this, or Bell Mobility might enable the feature in the future. No timeline known. For now, get BES/MDS Hosting in order to make 3rd party Internet applications work. (Note: Some applications such as IM+ will work on Bell Moblity if configuring using WAP/gateway/APN settings listed below. See this post)"
.

I looked at that post, but I still cant find where to mod my TCP settings. Maybe they dont allow that on my BB?

Yea

I hope this will work:

"i figured out Bell Mobility's settings by "hacking" together some settings off the main list of providers, and VOILA!! it works now in WAP version.

WAP Gateway: 207.236.197.199
WAP Gateway Port: 9203
WAP APN: internet.com <---- apparently this _IS_ now required and cannot be blank!"

Problem is, where the hech do I change those settings?

I beleive you do need Version 4.0 minimum of the OS. But there are also some "Service Books" that are supplied by the carrier. Most of configurable settings should be in Options/Settings. If you don't see a TCP option, then you don't have a TCP stack to configure.

The only option then is a hosted BES/MDS service and that costs some money. Seems like you don't have a blackberry friendly carrier.

You might try and see if there is a later version of the OS available from your carrier, but tha can cause problems if the upgrade messes up.

I have 4.1

I guess I'll have to call them up and see what is up. When I bought the "data plan" I took all options..no restrictions *shrugs*

As a side note , I don't have those WAP gateway settings on mine.

There was quite a big fuss on tmobile when they disabled the the APN gateway and thus the ability to run most third party applications for the Blackberry. People made such a stink(me included) that they eventually turned it back on...

Make sure you check how much data transfers you get on Bell, I know on Rogers I only get 25 meg (that to them is unlimited) and you can blow that really easily by just staying connected to ICQ. The overage charges on wireless data is absolutely insane in Canada.
