Ultimate BLING ride???

Was watching the Barrett-Jackson auction on the SPEED channel and this ride went for...

$3,240,000.00!!!

1954 OLDSMOBILE F-88 GM CONCEPT CAR

The XP-20 project, commonly known as F-88 was a pet project of Harley Earl (working with him was Bill Mitchell, Ken Pickering, Zora Duntov etc.). Four cars came out of the project, but only styling order #2265 (this car) survived. It was sold or given to E.L. Cord (Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg owner) in 1955. Hundreds of internal GM documents and original blue prints are still with this sole survivor.

The guy that bought it (from Colorado) also bid and won about 6 other cars at the event. Guess he didn't have enough toys as a kid, and he's out to make up for that.

That's one messed up looking ride, but sure is innovative for the day and age.

This one ALMOST became the Corvette for Oldsmobile. The idea of production was scrapped at the very last minute because Chevy was having such a hard time actually selling Vettes.

October 15, 1954

Zora Arkus-Duntov writes a memo to Ed Cole and Maurice Olley, noting that the Corvette appeared to be a failure. He suggests that to drop the Corvette would be an admission of failure. He urges General Motors not to cancel the car, but to create a separate department within Chevrolet to oversee Corvette development.

December 1954

Production of the 1954 model Corvette ends, with 3265 made, and 1076 unsold.

Funny how time changes things.
