Is Load Balancing easy to do?

Right now i have a 100mbps sitting on a good xeon server. It can handle all the 100mbs with no problem. Im thinking about getting another 100mbps and balancing the load on them together. I was woundering anyonce ever tried to do load balancing? Was it easy/difficult? I dont want to fuck everything up and have a huge downtime.

If you want a bit more info:

http://content.websitegear.com/artic...ce_methods.htm

Personnally, I did a round robin for my paysite, and took a server in London,UK .
My other one for that site is in Montreal, Canada. Works nicely, evben more if you use GeoIP to pre-filter the traffic.

Well if it is just serving the same files, just put the IP on your DNS and it will automatically load balance (just make sure you have a "main" server which has your database(s))...

What exactly are you trying to load balance? If I were you, I'd just get a 1gbit server. I mean, gbit cards were around for a long time, and a gbit line costs only like $80/mbit ... So roughly $80k for premium B/W (non-cogent)

your hosting should have the experience.
You can use a dedicated F5 load balancer or use an Extreme of Foundry layer 4-7 switch

server load? cpu usage?

how about a server with two Gigabit Connections/Cards. A dual Xeon is able to handle very much traffic with static sites. What is your currentcpu usage and load average of the server? If the load average is below 2-3 get another NIC or better a Gigabit Card into your server and you are fine. If its higher think about load balancing....
(to get this ssh into your server and type top, you see this at the top of the screen).
