Better: going gambling.

An expired passport is no valid ID ... Drivers permit with a picture identifies you, but doesn't confirm that you are Canadian ( Maury Povitch could after a DNA test ... ).
So you need the birth certificate if born in Canada or a Citizenship card if born abroad.

Conclusion: get a fucking passport

You've got until the end of this year to travel into the states without a passport... after that, airports, seaports will require one. A year later crossing at the border in your car will require it.

You need a doctor's note to rush a passport in less than 5 business days, from my recollection.

I've been crossing in my car weekly for years, and for the last year or so they've required a birth certificate or passport, no exceptions.

many moons ago when Jesus was still hanging on the cross (early 90s) I was trying to fly to Kansas City and the customs agent was the ultimate Eugene Tackleberry. (see imdb Police Academy if this reference is lost on you)

I had my birth certificate from Quebec, my driver's licence, health card and the usual shit a Canadian has. He starts busting my balls asking why I am trying to fly out of Toronto with a Quebec birth certificate. I was sort of confused by the question and explained that I was born in Quebec 20 years before my flight. I hand him damn near everything in my wallet and finally he tells me he can't allow me to board the plane because my birth certificate isn't laminated and it could have been printed anywhere.

So by this point I'm pissed that I am going to miss my flight and I'm on a pay phone trying to find out if my mother in law can bring me my passport. Nobody is home, yada yada so after hanging around for 45 minutes I notice the guy had left his station. I quickly go to a lady customs officer at another booth and when I'm trying to go through there she mentions to me that I am flagged in the system as not allowed to cross without a passport. She ends up letting me through after my sob story about needing to get there for a wedding and she tells me to make sure that on my return trip I have my passport otherwise I won't be able to get back in to Canada. She wasn't able to clear the flag in the system.

Needless to say I had to get my fucking passport couriered down to me to be safe.

And the funniest thing about all this is I couldn't be more white even if I went outside and rubbed myself in snow.

They have been saying this crap for 3 years now. It's just to scare people into getting passports since most people dont have them.

No. You can rush a passport without a Doctor's note. Someone visiting me in Costa Rica recently got his renewed in 2 business days.

My point was that this was suppose to be for 2005 and 2006 as well, we will see if it holds up for "2007"

apparently that may not happen after all from what they've been saying on the news, the economy of the border states and provinces is just too much to lose apparently..

i've gotten into the states without a birth cert, but getting back into the canada without it really sucks..

From http://www.pptc.gc.ca/menu_e.asp

Do I now need a passport to travel to the United States?

Though passports are the document of choice for travel, Canadian citizens do not currently require a passport to travel to the United States. However, Passport Canada encourages Canadians who are considering travelling outside Canada to obtain a passport, as it is the most widely accepted proof of Canadian identity and citizenship.

Passports - urgent applications

Note: Urgent or express services are available for emergency or compassionate reasons on a case-by-case basis. These services are available only for those applicants who can apply in person at a Passport Canada office and who provide proof to justify the urgency.

Service Turnaround Fee
Urgent next working day $70 + passport fee
Express 2 to 9 working days after receiving application $30 + passport fee

the difference is work , and vacation visits.. if your just on "pleasure' you may not need a passporte , but its still up to a border guard , if you are there for business , dont be suprised if they deny you..
