People would be more social without internet? I have thought of it and i have my doubts. You see antisocial people always existed. Internet as mean of communication is perfect for meeting new people closer to your interests.

Ok. I kind of agree with that, but I don't at the same time. I have doubts both ways.

There were anti-social people out there before the internet. However, I've never really considered "chatting / communicating" online as a true social interaction, because there's no body language involved, no personal touch, etc. Anyone getting most of their "socializing" from online conversation, in my opinion, isn't socializing at all, but really being kind of anti-social.

*shrug*

Without the internet I would probably have tought myself desktop or game programming. If the internet suddenly went away, I'd do the same as if it never existed.

However, I'm not of those webmasters who works for themself. If I was, the story would probably be different.

I think most people including psychologist, psychiatrists, therapists etc would disagree with you.

Anxiety disorders are on the increase because of the lack of socialization and they feel it's directly related to the internet.

I remember a time when I went to my 9-5 job after it was over I went out with friends, went to dinner, saw movies etc.

Now with the internet the job is no longer 9-5 the internet never closes so it is in essence a 24 hour job.

Now my workplace has invaded my home. And if you don't have a seperate office than your bedroom that brings on more issues such as affected sleeping patterns.

I can't seem to relax anymore, and most if not all people I know who have net jobs feel the same way. The beast is always there calling you. You have family over and sneak off to check email, ICQ or stats...stuff we didn't do years ago.

When I left my job I didn't walk away from family to call in to see how they were doing. The office was closed. They were all out eating with their families.

My goal is to eventually move away from the internet business wise 100% even if it means to go back to work in a brick and mortar.

It has had it's benefits, but IMO they do not outweight the added costs.

I don't blame it all on the internet, I just don't think most people are ready or balanced enough to limit its control over our lives.

Here's a quote from an article:

The 2000 SIQSS study, for example, found correlations that suggest that the more time people spend on the Internet, the less time they spend interacting with real humans.

More interesting quotes from that same article regarding sleepign which I mentioned above:
Quote:
* A majority of students agreed that they use the Internet to procrastinate
* Students using the Internet the most also obtained less sleep on average than their peers who used the Internet less frequently
* An unexpected 11% of students surveyed spent more hours per day on the Internet than sleeping
Regarding depression:
Quote:
* A surprising 26% of students surveyed admitted to feeling isolated or depressed because of the Internet.
Then read the secton titled:
The Internet and Social Connectivity

The students surveyed seem to contradict what the results are showing. Kind of like you thinking the internet makes them more social, when it really doesn't.

Very well said! Those of us old enough to remember when there was no internet remember very well the seperation of work and home. Seems there was a full 24 hours in a day back then.

i agree with what you say for the most part but those of us who actually work online are the minority. most are online for entertainment/boredom reasons. i can only imagine that without the net i'd probably be unemployed because all the factories in my area have since shut down and moved to other countries. i can only imagine the kind of woman i would have, if i'd have one at all. for some reason there are many fatties in the small area i come from and they always gravitated to me. i can only imagine that would never have much of a life but yes i would be more social but everything i know and do would of been limited to my small town, aside from the odd vacation. the internet freed me from the small town mentality.

I am 44 - growing up no one seemed to depressed or fearful that their life didn't have meaning. We still talked to one another and had similar social problems as now, not much has changed. Instead of being at home working on the net most would find work in factories, white collar work or stores.

In fact- all was well and believe it or not, there was a time that we didn't have cell phones and never thought that walking / driving home there was something so important that we must pull over to the side of the road and use a pay phone to chat. I think your over-reacting a bit - but take it from someone who survived the dark ages without all this technology - it can be done, and it really didn't ruin my fun or ability to meet girls or learn.

I'm 39 will be 40 this year, and I agree with what you say.
I was watching 20/20 the other day and the fact is we actually have more time than we did years ago for leisure activity. but the problem is we fill up that time with constant bullshit *like surfing the net, watching tv, etc* which leads us to believe we have no time.

One guy who claimed he had no time to do things he wanted to do stated he only watched 2-3 hours of tv a week. But when pushed to keep a diary it ended up being more than 2-3 hours a night.

I look at my nieces 19 and 13 who live with me. And the things that they think are important I can't help but laugh at.

They tell me they NEED to get online because they have to check their email. My oldest niece might as well have her cell phone surgically attached to her ear, she can't miss that one call or text message from a friend that has such important questions or information like.."what are you doing now? I'm at the mall."

I use my cell phone sparingly. In fact 90% of the time the battery is dead because I haven't used it in so long it's sitting on my desk not charging. I just don't pay attention to it.

I only worry about it when I go out and like to have it in case of an emergency.

I would have gone to school and became some sort of conservationist/biologist and probably enjoying life more than I am now. I got into this biz at the very end of my senior year of high school, when the time came to start school (I had signed up, been excepted etc, all that was needed was to pay the bill which my dad already was going to do) I said I want to take a semester off to give this internet thing a full go at it. Well by the time Janruary came I was living in my own apartment making over 400$/day, hahaha. But I know for a fact I would have been much happier doing something I truely love than internet porn. I am not bitching, I know for a fact I have the easiest job in the world, but its definitely clear to me the only reason I am still in this is for the super easy money, I basically am an unemployed bum who sits at home all day playing Xbox and playing on the computer, except I get paychecks.

it would be great, since I would of invented it. I remember watching War Games in the 80's thinking this is the future of business.

Seriously the internet has helped more people get away from bad jobs then anything ever. Finally away for people to work on their own with little start up risk.

For that reason, I think the world would be allot worse.

First choice of an alternative meaningful existance would be real estate purchase/development - less work, loads more money if ya do it right.

Second choice is mail order/direct mail within the adult biz - more damned work, capital, staff, resources and having to go to an "office" each day. All round this is a crappy move, but possible.

Best of all is the third option - retire and let others handle the real estate option

Internet is so young!
Looking forward... in 20-30 years from now, people will laugh about the internet we have today. The computers and the networks will be so ultra super intelligent, and I look forward to tell the grandkids storys about the golden old days where we had to type domain names to get our informations and entertainment

A few of my friends do eco/bio related stuff and have an great lifestyle doing "projects" with various international orgs and being "experts" in some field or other.

This takes them to the middle of the desert growing veg and to places like the Galapagos islands. One is the kinda "Crocodile Dundee" for reptile world and has loads of stuff published, both books and mags like National Geographic.

Another was in jungle territory in South America - they forgot the do the monthly air drop of food! But, he found some very interesting mushrooms and he can tell ya how to get high on gnats piss now!

Seriously.. bio and eco is becoming a major factor and it's actually being funded fairly well.
