My goal for the morning is to get as far off topic as humanly possible

Naw, just goin' through some pics on the old computer I ain't seen in while, and came across some shots of my father's latest pride 'n joy - a deck he built last year at his summer trailer.

Years ago my father and I made a living building decks, but we never seemed to get around to building one for ourselves. This was the first opportunity he had to design and create a deck the way he wanted one.

And now in his mid-60s, he built it entirely himself with no help in just three weeks!

It was his finest deck...and I was quite proud of the job he'd done.

Hes always on the move...speaking of which, hes in florida right now being a beach bum for 2-3 months.

His energy level never ceases to amaze me. Two summers ago he signed on for a 'work-camper' arrangement where he helped out with stuff around the campgrounds in exchange for discounts on their campsite.

Last summer he decided not to renew the arrangement - and the camp owners had to replace him with two guys, and still they didn't get as much done as he did the previous summer.

He laughs it off and says its the best way he knows to keep his blood sugar count down (he's got diabetes).

Gotta respect the seniors - sometimes they'll surprise ya'.

yeah, deffinately respect him. he still gets up at 3am and works till 12-1pm sometimes later everyday.

So essentially, what you're saying is the deck didn't live up to your assumptive expectations...based on your 6 months of experience building fences?

How is it that at 22 years of age you know the "pain, effort and struggle" it takes for someone in their mid-60s to build a deck by themselves?

Tell you what, Nofx...when you're in your mid-60s and slowed down with diabetes and back problems - and can duplicate a similiar deck in three weeks with no help from others - call me. I'll bring the cold beers and toast your accomplishment.

Until that time...I won't be holding my breath.
