US Soldier in Afghanistan: Great Quote!

December 9, 2005 (CNN) While interviewing an anonymous US Special Forces soldier, a Reuters News agent asked the soldier what he felt when sniping members of Al Quaeda in Afghanistan. The soldier shrugged and replied, ....."Recoil."

Sorry to say, but there truly is no way to do this. No matter what, people feel. One way or another.

I did a few years in the special services, and they try to train and teach you to control how to feel about what you are doing. But it is always there.

nice..i wonder if you are ever normal after killing people right up close through a snipe scope

it is one thing to shoot with a gun from far away and spray bullets.

but with those scopes you are pretty much watching them breathe in and out until you decide to take them

theymust be a bit pyscho after

Have you ever thought of being a sniper yourself? I've thought of how I'd feel before. Anyone else?

I hope it wasn't the guy who killed Pat Tillman (the former NFL player who was killed in Afghanistan by "friendly" fire).

As a joke, I can see the humor in it. Actually it's an old joke that has been around for ages. In reality however, taking lives can leave deep mental scars.

VA hospitals are filled with soldiers suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. Many other Vets end up in homeless shelters since they can't make the adjustment back to civilian life.

Carry on...

Reporters have no place on the Battlefield, much less getting in faces of soldiers trying diddle a story out of them. They got enough shit to worry about without worrying, "is this asshole gonna take me out of context and make me the next national controversy?"
Although that was a great answer!

Not really. When I was in the Marine Corps my MOS was 0321 (Force Reconnaissance). I served as a Scout-Sniper on quite a few occasions. I guess the training does have a lot to do with it but trust me, there are very few, if any, "psychos" in special forces.

They should weed people that "feel" out and force us psychopaths in...

The guys I went through with Did try to pass Sniper school, out of the 15 that tried I think only one made it, It's prob the toughest school mentally other the than SERE course.

He had to shit and piss himself and stay hugging the ground for 3 days he said.
I couldn't do that.

I thought so too, but there is actually one that is tougher: Air Force Para-Rescue. Talk about going through hell.....

After hurting my knee they told me I couldn't complete my training without waivers and sitting out 2 years, and you know about waivers, you never fucking get them.

So I did my research and found out I could go for the Airforces Para-Rescue since they don't trade eachother's medical profiles, (well I found a loop hole)

So I actually went after a space in the USAF, I got a letter of acceptance from them but I had to wait till my knee healed to go for it and by then I was already working in adult again, so i didn't go through with it.

It's amazing how easy it is to make false assumptions about others. I would have never thought there were this many prior mil (esp. Marines) on GFY (or in this industry). I am respectfully honored. Semper Fi

I don't believe I had the honor of meeting Sgt.Maj. Miller, however his name does sound very familiar. BTW, have you heard where they moved the new Scout-Sniper school to?
