If you have a qualified admin, and know the ins and outs of running your own server, they are a good deal. Their bandwidth is fast and reliable. Support is good and quick, but limited in scope.

just a point of advice

in hosting - as with anything

1. you usually get what you pay for
2. depending on what your hosting - support should be a very main consideration - not just the price
3. understand where your machines are - and if they are located within support reach? (meaning - does the tech have to drive for 3 hours to support your machines?) or do they have an inhouse datacenter?

after you understand these issues more clearly and balance them against your own demands - then you can make a better decision

cologroup is a+ on support

the dedicated box i got with him has been up since he built it, and running smooth. and i can always get ahold of him.

he's also a nice guy to deal with and a good friend now.

thanks kman

I agree with the above. I've been using them for a while and I am very happy.

Rackshack has well over 3000 servers at their place.

oh, and:

4. Always take what other webhost providers say in regards to their competition with a huge bag of salt.

I don't doubt a lot of customers leave RackShack with complaints about support.. but this is an issue of understanding. At that price point, a lot of people buy servers without knowing what they're doing. The problem with RackShack is NOT the quality of support.. it is the SCOPE of support.. and if you are equipt to deal with a limited scope of support, they can be a good deal. They support connectivity, and equipment failure. NOTHING ELSE.

If this is not suitable for you, I would strongly urge you to check out pimpshosts offering. I haven't done business with them, but I've chatted on ICQ, and they've been helpful to me even though I'm not a customer. When I'm looking to do a deal on big bandwidth, or locate a group of machines, I will strongly consider cologroup.

I have been hosting a few of my sites on a dedicated server at RackShack for one year now.

I'm VERY pleased so far, I only pay $100 a month for 400 GB of bandwidth. And very few downtimes.

Is support good ? It all depends on what you expect.

You are responsible for the software configuration of your server.

RackShack support is there for Hardware problems.

They might not be the best support in the world but they are responsive.

The only complaints I've seen about RackShack has been about support. No matter where you go, if you pay $100 a month for a 'dedicated' machine with 300-400 gigs of bandwidth you should expect only hardware support. This is how they make their money. To take advantage on such a good deal you should either
A) Know how to admin your box or
B) Know a tech friend that can help you out.

I think cobalt servers have an admin panel and it should help you out somewhat.

I'm using a white-box linux/AMD machine, and have been thoroughly satisfied. There were 2 unexpected crashes within the first 3 days of putting up the machine.. there have been no problems since, and I'm pushing a megabit on average.
