Straight guy running GAY site?

I am planning on starting a gay blog like http://pooncity.com but with dudes or gay reviews....

Can gay surfers tell if the owner of a site is straight? Do they really give a fuck? Any straight webmasters with expertise or experience in this market?

Take the time to learn the market and I think it's of little consequence that you're not gay.

Several of our largest affiliates are straight guys, and we work with them on a regular basis, sort of act like their "Queer Eye for the Straight Webmaster Guys".

It's certainly a great market to get into, and relatively untapped compared to the straight side of the industry.

Best of luck!

I'm in the same boat as the guy who started the thread, havent figured out how to be legit in this market, I'm straight and I want to reach gay customers... Its harder than marketing to lesbians or straight women, for some reason... No idea why.

Hmmm.

Appreciate the feedback.

I realize there is good potential there and plan on doing some thorough research before starting.

You should learn the lingo to start with, surf a few of the big gay link lists and TGPs to see how webmasters who are currently targeting gay surfers are doing their stuff.

In all honesty, marketing to the gay consumer is no different than marketing to the straight consumer so long as you know what you are saying.

You might want to check out GWW which is the longest running and largest gay marketing community in the industry. We also have hundreds of articles and resource listings that you should be able to use to your advantage too

Regards,

Lee

be careful of using the "lingo" if you don't fully understand it. one of the biggest giveaways on gay sites made by straight guys is misusing terms that they sorta kinda understand.

GWW was my first gay webmaster community - ya can learn a lot about the gay market there. GMS is also a good place to get started.

There are lots of straight webmasters in gay. Although I imagine a lot of copywriting on a blog would be one of the harder things to do straight up.

True enough.

Here's a nice 'basic' article that some of those looking to break in to the gay market can take a look at that has some of the more common terminology explained:

GWW is a good resource re the gay market. I'd advise you to look at that and other resources to get a clear and thorough understanding of your target audience.

You can't go wrong getting the perspective of other gay webmasters and gaywidewebmasters is probably the best resource out there.

I have many clients that are straight which own gay sites. If you were to run your own gay board you really would have to be up to date with the proper terms to use and what is hot.
If you were to run a gay web site you would have to some who could give you a gay point of view on the daily operations of the site. We employee gay webmasters to work on the gay web sites that we take in. We also have consultants that are gay that lead strong marketing campaigns for clients for both web and print.

Then you are wasting your money

The marketing director at one of the biggest gay sites online is a straight female and she does a kick-ass job of managing BadPuppy.

Its all marketing, gay or straight, so long as you know your target demographic, you can sell to it.

You dont have to be gay to sell gay sites, no more than you have to be straight to sell straight sites.

Regards,

Lee

They were not hired for just the reasoning of being gay, we actually didn't know at the time of hiring them. After we started doing consulting they asked if they could work with the gay sites.

I own several gay sites and I am straight. Like anything else, learn your trade, read everything you can, and have others (gay men are best) to review your work. This is very helpful, especially in the beginning. The longer you spend with it ? the better you will understand the market. In my experience ? I honestly started understanding to many aspects of it. It took time, an open mind, and a lot of understanding. In addition, I have several gay friends that helped me see thing clearer. Often, I would offend them without realizing it. They helped me understand and to see things from their perspective. I am not saying I understand 100% of it nor will I. However, I better able to understand, relate, and market gay sites than I would have thought in the beginning.

Shut the fuck up, moron. If you can't run a gay site, you can't run a straight site either. Has nothing to do with your preferences. It's all marketing.

Until then, shut your fucking mouth - tool.

Do yourself a favor and educate yourself. Get some common sense.
