Is it just me or is everyone a "designer" now?
It must be nice for clients to have bestowed upon them this buyers market...LOL.
And the funny thing is people who actually label themselves as a "designer." Something I've always tried desperately even to this day to avoid. Even when I put up my first portfolio I put in the header "gallery stylist." It was based on a joke Barry Sobel used to tell back in the 80's that everyone was a "stylist." And he had a point. In the movie industry the people who prepared food for commercials to look pretty etc were "food stylists." LOL. Anyway, I was a gallery maker. That's what I did. I pounded out 1,000's over the last few years. Most are still in use today, a lot of you use them just don't know it. Now, one thing I did do was hire actual designers to work for me..that was different. However I am out of that game now...LOL Congrats to the winners. ![]() |

Sorry man...too late for broken english. And no it's not just me. Take a look at threads 2 years ago asking for gallery designers and you had like 4-5 people involved..most big design companies didn't want to have anything to do with them...I never counted the outsourcing companies..LOL. Now you have anyone and everyone who is trying to make cash on the side opening up their own design shop...LOL. Not bashing, just noticing the glut. |

Actually with so many new designers, the chances of finding someone who actually knows what the hell to do are falling.
Most designers on the market nowdays are just guys who have learnt how to make pretty pictures and have no clue how to sell.

Yeah they still work good but the main problem I have is that I dont really push the sponsor anymore so they are a tad redundant

The future belongs to the designer designers...because they design by design.

I wasn't really claiming to be a "stylist." It was all tongue in cheek...but I sure as hell wasn't a "designer" either. I made galleries. I made money making galleries. I made literally 1,000's of galleries for a bunch of clients. I was a gallery maker. But my point about this thread is that I have seen in threads asking for designers, real designers show up. And then I have seen people who have taken up "design" for whatever reason they deem necessary show up as well. There is a glut in that market, and it's a buyers market. When I first started in this business some people were charigng $70 for a single gallery template. Others around the $40-$50 market. Prices have dropped considerably. |

What do you expect in an era where a person who works the pump at a gas station is referred to as 'fuel transfer specialists.'
'Designer' and 'stylist' are both convoluted terms, just like 'webmaster'. In the old days, it was simply graphic artist and/or typesetters. Old school...we used Browning, data optic and Itek line cameras, emulsion-based neg film (blow-backs and PMTs), light tables, paper masks, surgical scalpels (for film stripping), ruby tape, flip-top arc burners for makin' plates - all the really fun stuff (not). We used terms like 'paste-up' and 'layout'. We had to calculate image reduction or enlargement on the camera with a little paper gadget called a 'reduction wheel'. We had trays of developer, stop and fixer chemicals and pieces of string hung across the darkroom to hang film with wooden clothespins to dry. The daily mantra was 'color registration...color registration.' Now they call themselves 'designers'. Cha', whatever. Very few of them have the slightest clue about the stuff I mentioned above. |

Honestly, I much prefer "marketing specialist". My background in mainstream was marketing, and that's what I do in adult today. There are a million people who are much better "designers" than I am, but being able to design, and being able to market a product are two different things entirely.

![]() I find it hilarious when people, just because I have a link to my design shop in my sig, automatically assume that I'm a designer. I also find it insulting, to a certain degree.
