What resolution do you design for?

I know alot of people say 800x600 is dead but all the major news sites still seem to use it. What is your opinion is it safe to use 1024x768 or should I stick with 800x600?

800x600 is still used by 20%+. Your call.

yeah I was just reading that.. Im wondering how many of that 20% have broadband or care to whip out their wallet... I tend to assume those with old hardware are cheap!

Assumptions never make you money unless you can prove them to be right. You could also assume that they're older (45+) and thus prefer lower resolution, so that they can see things better. That age group would mean they could easily afford whatever it is you're pitching to them.

It's not an "old hardware" issue. Alot of people are just more comfortable with that screen size. Should have seen the look on my sisters face when I changed her screen resolution one day.

I design for 800x600

You know there are still allot of people that have the hardware but just done know how to change the resolution. Ive still done allot of sites for 800x600 just because of that. Personals sites of mine are all done for 1024x768 though. I find more & more its a "personal" choice if that 20%+ is 'important' to you or worth taking the chance on skipping.

you can always use tables which strech to fit screen-size.

My sites look ideal in 1024x768 or above, but I ensure that they don't look bad in 800x600

As long as they don't generate a horisontal scroll-bar, it's all good.

800x600... even on the higher resolutions then it looks even more crisp, and you're not blocking out the part of the marketshare that is still on older technology. It's just a good idea.

I have mine set to 800x600 because that is easier on my eyes.

That is also what I build my pages for.

I did a site ones that did a check on the users resolution & then based on that loaded the proper css. So you has 800.css 1024.css etc etc & then the site worked no matter what.. ever think of that?
