When I first started working life, the practise in almost every business was that you started at the bottom and slowly climbed the ladder, learning every job along the way. And stepping into "dead mens' shoes" was about the only way you were ever going to get promoted.

That was such a frustrating progression, it is probably the main reason that I soon decided to go work for myself. I decided very early on that a boss really didn't need to be able to do someone else's job: only to be able to recognize whether he or she was doing it properly. It isn't even necessary to be able to determine what someone is doing wrong. It is enough to know that the result is not what is required.

Wrong or right, believing that left me free to feel it was okay to get into a variety of businesses about which I knew absolutely nothing (the only formal training I ever had was in chartered accountancy) and although I cannot say I have never made a mistake, overall everything I did was successful.

In fact online porn is the first thing I ever tackled as a one-man band and I wish circumstances had not made that necessary. I have been forced to achieve some degree of competency in everything that goes into operating web sites, but I would be kidding myself if I were to believe there are not many people in every aspect of the job who make me look like a rank amateur.

The experience has confirmed that my talent is definitely not for doing, but for seeing the big picture, hiring the right people and getting the best out of them. I don't quite know how you establish a foundation for that, except by getting on with it and producing results.

Not puttin ya down, you've prolly made a few bucks. And it's not like I've booked a million bucks recently either.

im building my foundation as we speak.

i came into this business with a couple domains i had owned for a few years, and the desire to make it work.

i had a decent amount of coding experience (as a hobbyist) so i figured i would start a tgp since that was what i enjoyed surfing.

so i went with it.

i surfed to lightspeedcash, and stumbled into the world of affiliate marketing.
i dumped a bunch of their FHG on heres-some-porn.com, painted it pink, and waited for the money to come rolling in.

as you guys all know, 3 days later and im a millionaire!

i guess im about 4 months into it now, and im either gonna buy an island or a basketball team.

back here in reality, im learning more every day, trying new ideas and coming up with tons more.

i have written my own CMS (didnt know i was writing a 'CMS' at the time)
my own trade script (without every actually seeing a trade script, or how it should work)
i wrote the backend for my ad rotation system
designed the sites, did the art work
i have learned a little about buying traffic, and how much bought traffic can suck.
im discovering ways to make that traffic more useful, and am experimenting with more all the time.

ive met a bunch of awesome people on the boards, and have had the pleasure to learn from a lot of you.
i went to my first show today, and met up with some very cool people.

thanks everybody

i knew this business wouldnt be easy, but i gotta tell ya, i was a little surprised at how it actually is.

so to summarize:

no foundation to speak of. (noob)
trying really hard to build one. (hardworking noob)
love you all. (mean it)
this is hard work. (pimpin aint easy)

thank you for letting me share

Excellent stuff John!

It is very useful knowing some languages or having coding experience - there is no limit to what can be generated or automated.

Now I have been seeing people coming out of nowhere with nothing behind em....ie: no foundation....these people basically are taking there role on a day to day basis moving from A to B to C and so on....but eventually there will be no point to move on too....

You need a foundation to build on, without a solid one the hpouse will start to crumple...

preach it brother. it aint 2000 anymore.
