Shooting in hotel rooms, lighting question?

When shooting in a hotel room are external lights really necessary?

Maybe I should reword the question...

Would the on camera flash (Speedlite 580EX) be good to fill in the missing light?

If you are looking for something affordable check out the 100 watt Phillips daylight bulbs they are bright as hell
just replace the normal bulbs with them

Bro dont bother with shooting in hotels. Due to the usual colour of hotels I always think the content looks fucking bland. Hotel rooms are usually just a mixture of beiges.

Find a service appartment as they tend to look better and are bigger so it is easier to light properly.

Personally I would find someone in your area who has experience in lighting plus their own kit and hire them for the day.

Hmm... Have a look at Bob Coulter's work from http://www.crazybabe.com.
Shooting in hotels, using available light plus one flash (or sometimes two I guess)...

Dont get me wrong I do shoot in hotels but I just dont want them to look like hotels. The hotel look has been killed by the gonzo craze. The content I think all looks the same unless you get a hotel room that has an individual look.

The hotel he is shooting in has class though. A Hyatt or Hilton room is total shit.

Not if the hotel rooms come with studio lighting provided!

While we are asking stupid questions I thought I would ask one.

I want to start posting TGP galleries, can I just use someone elses and change the URL?

And do I need all the pictures to be from the same set? I was thinking of taking a few from Lightspeed, few from MILF Hunter, some of my own and something else to give the gallery a broader appeal.

That is the level of questions, regarding webmastering, that get everyone helping when someone ask photographt questions.

Validus buy some books, or go to the local library and read up on photography.

Hi Paul, I got the book, well two do far. Very good and interesting information. Problem is that you can't ask books questions

Considering you (and some other people here) are pro's... it is forth asking

Always get a room in a nice hotel, make sure there is enough space around the bed to set up lights. I would suggest you turn off all hotel lights and just use your own light set. Donot forget to bring your extension cables, dont hook up all lights to the same outlet, you will blow it.

If you want to bounce off the ceiling then make sure the colour is reasonably neutral, otherwise you'll have colour cast probs.

BTW I haven't done much model work but I've had success cranking up the Flash Exposure Compensation (sometimes to +2 or +3 stops) and pulling back with curves in post processing. It's the "expose to the right" concept for flash photography; it also allows you to shoot with less (or no) ambient light so long as the room isn't too large.

One con: it may not be too comfortable for someone who has their eyes open (ie the model)

Go to Lowes or Home Depot and get 2 of those small yellow hallogen lamps. They clost around $30 each. These work great for video! Aim the lights torward the ceiling... and you're done
