What's better to brand with? Longer .com or short .info, .tv, .biz etc?

When marketing a website to a mainstream audience (radio, tv, magazines). What is a better route to take?

A .com domain name that is longer, maybe harder to remember or a .info or .tv (similar) domain that is short and easy?

Do people no matter what they here, type in the .com extension or do they listen to the .info's?

On a related subject, looking for a dating domain for a larger project. I posted a thread in the buy/sell forum but nothing much of interest was in there. Anybody have one they are looking to sell?

.coms are the only ones the general public remembers easily. Sure, you can brand any domain but the average non tech savvy surfer only remembers the .coms.

Not that large of a budget. Most likely in the 4 figure range for the right one.

Thats why I was asking the question. I cant break the bank with a domain like that. So whats better a 3 or 4 word .com or a one word .info, .biz, .org etc?

If your site becomes successful and you don't have the .com, you'll end up sending the .com owner lots of free traffic. It's best to start with a .com.

.com is the way to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like GeorgeK said, you will waste alot of your traffic to the .com owner of it.

And if the .com owner is savvy, he/she won't let it go cheaply once the traffic to it explodes. Even worse, one of your competitors acquires it before you do...

Its softcore adult (dating with an obvious emphasis on hooking up) but the domain cant have anything graphic in it as this will be advertised mainstream.

I'd go .com although .tv has some branding potential... forget about .info and .biz, they're the bastard stepchildren of the internet.

.com is preferred but seeing a lot of activity around .biz above the other extensions and I am of the opinion you can brand and bank on a .biz in the future.

see http://HuntingMoon.com category "dating" for some domain options (.com's)

If your gonna rely on typins only, then .com is the way to go.
In the end its what you put on your site that counts. Check out my sig for great sponsors you can use for it

I once ran a big site on a .net... the guy from the .com was capitalizing big time on my traffic (over 2500 typeins a day I was missing).
