:stop Webair demands your ID and info

I heard Webair makes you send them a scan of your ID and Driver's License even for a $9.95 virtual plan but only tell you about it after ( couple days later) you signed up, payed and everything. Is that true?

They require a scan or photo of your ID either faxed or emailed to them. However your account isn't activted unless you do it so you can't really do anything until it's done.

Not a big deal. Webair is well worth 5 mins of hasle.

they require it for all "unknowns" (ie not a big playah like PeteKT)

Most hosts require this info these days - along with service agreement contracts.

If you're doing legit biz, why worry?

Ask your provider to sign a non-diclosure/full liability contract as well if you're worried - that way you can go after their ass should they play silly buggers.

And you'd be pretty fucking stupid to not have a card that wasnt 0% liability for unauthorized charges anyway.

Sure it's a pain but it's the cost of doing genuine business these days unfortunately.

+ Also, if you're THAT paranoid, fly into their office and show your ID + CC, pay a month in cash and I'm sure they'll let you in no probs.

STILL not convinced? pay via paypal, check, wire, bank transfer, goats blood, vaginal juice - whatever they take.

You have options!

I wouldn't mind giving a host my copy of my ID and drivers' licence if they give me theirs, I mean what's next? asking for your CC details for just in case???

really? well typically the government wouldn't use my info for fraud purposes that could get me into trouble. if i am doing nothing wrong my information is useless to the government but still very useful to theives.

oh, i know there are options. most offer paypal or epass as an alternative. and im not even worried about the credit card. its having my drivers license number that worries me. you can do a lot of bad stuff with that. the biggest peeve tho is that i have to do so much to prove who i am but they do nothing to prove who they are. sure they provide you with a server but what good will that do when someone uses your info illegally or they shut down the server and disappear. also, the contract thing is useless if you have servers with say 5-10 different places. who can you place the blame on if someone happens..all of them? and theives can just send fake ID's anyhow...

well i can tell you why companies would require to do this.

You have kids that sign up for stuff pay the first time then don't pay again
wait till their account gets closed.......repeat

If they don't know who you are they're not able to stop you

huh? you can blacklist their credit card/name and shut down the server the day after payment fails to come through.

No you can't really, coz people pay using different payment methods, there's
a lot of reasons why payments isn't always on the same day, weekends, holidays, banks and some people DO forget to pay an invoice if they know
who you are that's not a problem...
